Mardi Gras originated in 1829 when two men brought French customs including the celebration of Mardi Gras to New Orleans. Mardi Gras has religious significance as it takes place the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, and marks the last day to eat meat before the fasting period of Lent. It has also become a carnival celebration known for fun and festivities, especially in New Orleans where it is now strongly associated with letting loose and enjoying Fat Tuesday.
