3. Introduction
• Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP)
ACT is a reproductive health measure that
enables the woman to ‘opt–out’ of an
unwanted or with out endangering her life &
wellbeing .
• MTP should not be mechanism for restricting
family size or for avoiding unwanted birth in
routine .
• Safe abortion is one of the component of RCH
(Reproductive Child Health ) program.

4. Aim
• The aim of the Act is to reduce maternal
mobility & morbidity due to illegal abortion .
• It provides an opportunity to motivate women
for adopting some form of contraception
• To regulate and ensure access to safe abortion
care and defines ‘when’ ‘where’ and under
‘what’ conditions abortion is permissible

5. Reason of abortion
Unwanted pregnancy .
Pregnancy of older age .
Health problems during pregnancy .
Pregnancy on the count of rape.
Sometimes sex selective abortion are
completely sought .
Sometimes contraceptive failure.

6. MTP Act , 1971, ways down the
following Criteria
 The condition under which a pregnancy can be
terminated .
i. Medical Ground – Where the continuation of
pregnancy might endangered the life of pregnant
woman or cause great injury to the physical &
mental health , such , as heart , rental failure ,
hypertension , psychiatric .
ii. Humanitarian – Where pregnancy is the result of
rap.
iii. Socio-economic – A woman already has been
deliver children and with cannot supply another
child.

7. Who can preformed such terminations
Registered medical practitioners trained in
MTP can perform such terminations .
Single doctors can terminated pregnancy
below 12 week .
When pregnancy exceeds 12 week & in that
case the option of two medical practitioners is
necessary to terminate pregnancy .

8. Which such termination can be
performed
• MTP can be performed all district hospital ,
CHC, PHC, where there are OT and Doctor
trained in MTP are available.
• Equipment of MTP has been provided to non
government organization to promotes safe
abortion .
• Training facilities for MTP has been set up by
the government .
