Colonia del Sacramento is a historic town in southwestern Uruguay, located across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, it has a well-preserved colonial center that reflects its Portuguese and Spanish influences. In 1995, Colonia del Sacramento's historic quarter was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its architectural significance.
