Higher Education is ‘Under Pressure’
Higher Education is operating in a competitive market:
•Efficiency as a consequence of decreasing subsidies
•Massification since 1960s due to growing student numbers
•Mobility due to Lissabon Agreement
•Heterogeneity due to massification and mobility
•Personalisation due to Bachelor (major & minor) and Master tracks

How to deal with pressures considering lecture rooms?
ICT in education must not only focus at subject matter, pedagogies, tools
but at lecture rooms and scheduling as well (real estate & facility mgt.)

Next Generation Classroom is a plea to the management of:
•Real Estate and Facility Management
•Education and Student Affairs
•Shared Service Centre - ICT

Splitting the Lecture Room for more Spaces

                                                                     Clear

Lecture Rooms in Grid to Augment Audience

Touch screen shows planned lecture rooms.
Lecturer (de)selects rooms on interactive floor plan and activates
                     video and audio streams.
Lecturer may override default values from classroom planners.

Intelligent lectern shows presentation in mini format.
Questioners’ pictures are shown in order.
When selected a videoconference channel is set up.

08: Design and develop applications for showing planned lecture rooms on
touch screen, selection by lecturer, activation of video and audio streams.
09: Design and develop console for virtual queuing of questioners.

Occupation, Utilisation, Presence
Occupation = which lecture rooms are in use?
Utilisation = how many seats of total capacity?

                                                                           Touch buttons
                                                                           on campus card
Logging presence in lecture room for interaction
                     Logging pedestrian traffic on campus

10: Which RFID chip on campus card? Which detection gate?
11: Design and develop presence application (check exams, visitors).
12: Design and develop occupation and utilisation logger.

Educational practices
with group work
demands seating that
facilitates interaction and
collaborative work.

Graduation project: Student Industrial Design designs and builds prototype
of so-called FlexStool. Delivery expected in June 2010. Subsequently
