P.S. Asian Session – Markets relieved as US standoff ends

Just after midnight in Washington, US President Obama signed legislation to lift the debt
ceiling and end the government shutdown that lasted 16 days. The deal comes just in
time since the government’s authority to borrow ends on October 17th.
Markets were relieved that the impasse on the budget negotiations finally ended, as
there were fears that the world’s largest economy was on the brink of a default while
Republicans and Democrats bickered over the government’s spending bill for the next
fiscal year.
There was not a huge move in the currency markets following the news, as this budget
deal in essence is only “buying time” for Washington lawmakers until a more “longer”
term budget fix is found, while the current bill that was passed is only enough to fund
the government until January 15th. One positive is that a default has been averted and
financial turmoil has been prevented.

4. The news of the budget deal did have a positive impact on risk appetite and confidence
is trickling back. Investors can now return their focus back on fundamentals and
economic data. During the US shutdown, markets were mostly driven by the politics in
the US. Meanwhile, a lot of important US data, like nonfarm payrolls were not released
during the shutdown, so now markets eagerly await these data.
In today’s Asian session the US dollar climbed to just under 99.00 yen before slipping to
98.38, entering the European session at a 0.3 percent loss.
The euro gained 0.1 percent versus the dollar, to end the session at $1.3547. Against
the yen, euro fell from a high of 133.82 down to 133.31.
