10. "Career" is defined as
an occupation or profession, esp. one requiring special training,
followed as one's lifework.
a person's progress or general course of action through life or
through a phase of life, as in some profession or undertaking
A career is defined as the pattern of work-related experiences
that span the course of a person’s life.
12. Protean Career
‘A process which the person, not the organisation, is managing. It consists of all the
person’s varied experiences in education, training, work in several organisations,
changes in occupational field, and so on. The protean career is not what happens
to the person in any one organisation. The protean person’s own personal career
choice and search for self-fulfilment are the unifying or integrative elements in
his or her life. The criterion for success is internal (psychological) not external
Careers that are driven more by individuals than organisations have been given the
name ‘protean careers’. Such careers are propelled by a need for psychological
success rather than by traditional, external measures of success.
13. Three kinds of flexibility associated with the
protean career:
It provides a new
approach to time
over the span of
one’s career
There is also an
enlargement of career
space. Careers can
move out from the
narrow boundaries of
paid work in a formal
organisation.
There is a reversal in
the way we think about
the relationship
between the employee
and the organisation

Editor's Notes
It provides a new approach to time over the span of one’s career. Unlike the traditional sequence of upward moves or predictable phases, the protean career does not follow a linear course. For the protean career person there is no idealised career path; he or she creates a flexible, idiosyncratic course, as unique as a voice print or the image of one’s iris used as a PIN code.
The distinction between work life and home life becomes blurred as work and non-work roles overlap.
The protean career requires a different perspective, with the individual in the foreground and the organisation in the background. The person pursues his or her personal aspirations within the context of the organisation. When the context is no longer conducive to further development, the protean career person leaves the organisation in search of a better place or a change of scene.
