This is the Youth in Mining Manifesto on how to transform the South African mining industry. The industry must :
- Be Ethical
- Be Transparent
- Be Inclusive
- Engage the Youth
2. How can we make mining more
attractive to the youth?
1. The industry must support efforts like ours that aim to
consolidate the youth voice and make a conserted effort to
engage the youth, and see them as the successors to the
industry.
Our Foundation is open to collaborate with any like-minded
organisation as the battle for transformation requires us to work
together to realise it.
2. Mines must operate ethically and prioritise their social license
to operate so communities can be proud to host mines in their
towns, knowing that opportunities created there can break the
chains of unemployment and poverty.
3. The DMR should be transparent about mineral rights and
tenure - utilise a reputable cadastre system that will allow the
public and interested parties to know who owns what and what
are they doing with it.
4. Mining must embrace technology and innovation. It has to
transform into an industry with highly technical and highly skilled
people at helm on all spheres.
5. Demistify the industry. Create a platform accessible to all youth
who want to find out what this industry is about, whether living in
a mining community, or wanting to study towards careers in
mining, or looking for business opportunities in mining.
