nessis necessaryifwearetosolvethesedilemmasandmove
intoamoreethicalandproactiveawarenessoflifeandourplace
inthecosmos.inthecosmos.
WhatistheStudyofConsciousness?
estudyofconsciousnessisamultidisciplinaryinquiryinto
thenature,dynamics,andfunctionsofthemind.Itcomprises
newinsightsabouttheontologyofmindthatareinformedby
depth psychology,neuroscience,quantum physics,and
contemplativepractices.eintegralstudyofconsciousness
emphasizesbroadandintellectuallyrigorousapproachestothe
mindandtheexplorationofcutting-edgeandcontroversial
issues.issues.eseincludethenatureofconsciousness,theintersec-
tionofmindandmatter,andwaysofexploringlevelsofaware-

CERCCERChastheopportunitytobethepioneerfortheintegratedstudyofconsciousnessatamajorpublicre-
searchuniversity.WhilecurrentandfutureacademicprogramsinConsciousnesswillbehousedinthe
SchoolofSTEM,CERCwillenablethegrowthoftheseprogramsthroughfacultyrecruitment,transdisci-
plinaryresearch,communitypartnerships,scienticconferences,andcontinuingeducationprogramsfor
alumni,faculty,andprofessionals.CERCwillbeinauniquepositiontoeducateanewgenerationof
scholars,scientists,andresearchersandtoinspirethem towardgreaterawarenessandrespectfortheir
responsibilitiestotheplanetasempoweredcitizensofthecosmos.

SinceJanuary,wehavebeenworkingwithProfessorofConsciousnessKathleenD.Noble,Ph.D.on
preliminaryresearchconcerningtheeffectsoflearningaboutconsciousnessonundergraduatestudents.
WepresentedourfindingsatUW Bothell’s1stAnnualUndergraduateResearchSymposium (poster
included).
HavingHavingworkedcloselywithDr.Noble,welearnedabouthersubmissiontotheUniversityofWashington
proposingaMinordegreeinConsciousnessatUW Bothell.Wewereexcitedaboutthepossibilityof
receivingadegreethatrecognizedourcommitmenttowardsconsciousnessandDr.Noble’sintentionsto
developacomprehensiveandcutting-edgedegree-grantingundergraduateprogram inConsciousness
Studies.Toconveyourexcitementandtheimportanceandneedforsuchaprograminuniversity-level
academics,wesubmittedaletteronbehalfofourcluburgingUW Bothell’sAcademicCounciltoapprove
theproposeddegreeasacriticalprioritytotheacademiccommunity(letterincluded).
WeWechanneledoursenseofurgencyandeagernessregardingtheMinordegreetowardthesuccessand
impactofourclubevents.WewererecognizedandawardedbytheOfficeofStudentLifeforhavingthe
most“OutstandingProgramoftheYear”amongstallcampuslifeeventsandprogramsforourWhidbey
GeoDomeeventwhichhadunprecedentedattendance,includingthelikesofoutgoingUW Bothell
ChancellorKenyonS.Chan.
WhileWhilewewererecognizedforoneofourevents,wefeelourawardreflectsthesignificanceofeachofour
clubeventsthispastyear.OnMarch1,wehostedaseminarbyGenderReconciliationInternational(GRI).
AssociatedwiththeSatyanaInstitute,GRIdirectstheireffortstowardsinteractiveseminarsandwork-
shopsaimedattransformingandraisingawarenessabouttheunrealizedglobalgenderapartheid,gender
relations,andtheirimplications.OnApril10and11,wehostedtheWhidbeyGeoDomeProjectscreening
oftheEarthPortalshow.FeaturedatthePacificScienceCenter,EarthPortalisanimmersiveaudio-visual
journeyjourneyintothedepthsoftheknownuniverse-fromlifeonEarthtotheMilkyWaygalaxyandbeyond-
inthesettingofadomedscreen,producingthesensationoftravelingthroughtheuniverse.OnApril29,
wehostedmasterluciddreamerRobertWaggoner.Havingloggedmorethanathousandluciddreamsover
his30yearsexperience,Mr.Waggonerdiscussedhisfindingsaboututilizingluciddreamingtoexplorethe
natureofreality,thedreamstate,andconsciousnessasdetailedinhisacclaimedbook,LucidDreaming:
GatewaytotheInnerSelf.Eachofoureventsprovednotonlyrelevanttothecampuscommunitybutwas
receivedwithgreatintrigueandcuriosity.
AsOfficers,wearedelightedbytheresponseofourcampuscommunitytowhatwefeelshouldbeafunda-
mentalsubjectofinquiry.Fourofoutoffiveofficersareoutgoingstudentsandwillhavegraduatedbythe
beginningofnextyear.Webidadieuwiththanks,gratifiedknowingthatoureffortstoadvancethestudy
ofconsciousnesshasresonatedwithourpeers.
ThetaskoffurtheringtheunderstandingofConsciousnessStudiesis,ironically,invitingconsciousnessto
understanditself.Andsoitwillcontinue,asourmottopromises:“EsseLucem,EsseParadoxum”;“Bethe
light,betheparadox.”

AsAsyouarenodoubtaware,thestudyofconsciousnessisanemergingfieldthatisattemptingtoadvance
ourunderstandingofthemindandbrainbyintegratingknowledgefrom avarietyofdisciplines.The
coursematerialdrawsfrom psychology,neuroscience,medicine,quantum physics,biology,and
contemplativeandexperientialtraditions.Throughaninterdisciplinaryapproach,theConsciousness
classesfosterthenotionthatexistenceisagrand,interconnectedandinterdependentphenomenon.This
holisticviewisbasedontheperspectivethatthewholeisoftengreaterthanthesumoftheparts,andthe
realizationthathumanbeingsareactiveparticipantsinaconstantlyunfoldinguniverse.realizationthathumanbeingsareactiveparticipantsinaconstantlyunfoldinguniverse.
TheConsciousnessminorreflectsandamplifieseverythingthiscampusstandsfor,andallthatitwantsfor
itsstudents.Weareprofoundlyexcitedandfeelincrediblygratefultohavetheseclasseshere,anditisour
collectivedreamtoseethecoursesbecomeaminor,whereitwilltouchuncountablelivesandinspirea
newgenerationtothinkholisticallyandmindfullyaswetrytosolvesomeoftheworld’smostcritically
pressingissues.
WithintheScienceandTechnologyprogram,wecurrentlyhavearesearchgroupthatisexploringthe
effectstudyingconsciousnessattheuniversitylevelhasonstudents.Whilewearestillintheprocessof
dataanalysis,ourpreliminaryfindingsindicatethatthissubjecthasaprofoundimpactonstudents-not
onlyinregardstotheirsenseofexcitementandacademicdrive,butalsointhewaystheyviewandinteract
withtheworld.ItisourbeliefthattheexpansionofConsciousnessclasseswouldgreatlybenefitbothS&T
andUWBoverall.ThecreationoftheminorwillenabletheUniversitytoaddmoreclassesthatexplore
consciousnessconsciousnessingreaterdepth,aswellasattractnewfacultymemberswhobringuniqueandvaluable
perspectives.
Dr.KathleenNoble’sworkhassetthefoundationandprovidedauniqueopportunityforUWBtoestablish
thefirstConsciousnessdepartmentatamajorpublicuniversity.WehopethattheAcademicCouncilwill
allowtheimplementationoftheminorsothatthiscampuscanbecomeapioneerinoneofthemost
cutting-edgeandinterdisciplinaryfieldsemergingfrom academia.Countlessstudentswhohavetaken
ConsciousnessclasseshaveapproachedDr.Noble,academicadvisors,andus,theofficersofthe
ConsciousnessClub,toaskwhentheminorwillbeimplemented;manyhaveevendelayedtheirgraduation
ininordertotakemoreoftheclasses,andinthehopethattheminorwillbeputintoeffectbeforethey

- 21. graduate.Studyingconsciousnessis,attheveryleast,eye-opening,andhasthepowertotransformand
enlighten;tocultivateanunendingfascinationwiththeworldinwhichwelive.Thisisourhopeforthe
studentsatUWB:that,throughtheirexperiencesattheUniversity,theycontinuetofindinspirationinthe
thingstheylearn,andthattheymaytranslatethisaweintotheireverydaylives.
ThereThereisabiologicaladvantagetobeingawestruck.Aweisthatwonderfulsenseofcuriosityand
excitementatwhatwe-individuallyandcollectively-areapartof.Awespursustolearnmore,discover,
andmoveforwardwithhope;itenhancesourconnectiontotheworld,helpingusfindmeaningand
belongingwithinit.Unfortunately,itseemstoomanypeopleinourtimehavelostthissense;lostitintheir
educationalpursuits,intheirwork,andintheirlives.Thestoryofouragetendstoleaveusdisillusioned,
divertingourfocusfromthethingsthattrulyspeaktowhoweare,whatwewanttodo,andwhatkindof
impactimpactwewanttohaveontheworldbeforeweleaveit.Ourpersonalexperiencescertainlyreflectthis
story.Yetconsciousnessstudiesledustoaplacewherewecouldrediscoverthesparkwelost,andfind
whatwedidn’tevenknowweweresearchingfor.Consciousnessstudiesigniteduswithpassionand
enthusiasm thathasletuslooktowardthefuturewithoptimism andconfidence-andwewouldlike
nothingbetterthanforotherstofeelasaliveaswedonow.
