A resident of Syosset, New York, Paul Angelides is an engineering executive active with the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. Paul Angelides’ interests include amateur radio, and he has held an Amateur Extra Class license for many years. In June 2021, ham radio operators associated with the Deep South Amateur Radio Club set up operations on the USS Drum and USS Alabama battleships. The occasion was an extended 48-hour “Ships Across America” ham radio event, during which participants on approximately 70 museum ships worldwide attempted to make contact with one another. The operators who set up on the USS Alabama prepared for months through a restoration project centered on the second-deck Communications Room. They painstakingly brought World War II-era radios back into functionality, with a particular focus on the original antennas. As described by participants, the effort required extensive “scraping and painting,” as well as technical knowhow. At the end of their undertaking, club members were able to communicate with other dedicated ham radio operators, while promoting a historic battleship. Each person they came into contact with received a QSL card with a picture of the USS Alabama on it, as a memento of their radio correspondence.
