Dos and-don’ts-when-grooming-your-new-puppy
1. Do’s and Don’t when Grooming Your
New Puppy
Tips from pet professional “Heather Ford”
Yourcrittersitter.com.au
2. To Do...
• Do handle your puppy as
part of play so he gets use
to being full body contact.
Touched him all over
especially his head, his ears,
under his belly, and his
paws.
• Spread his toes and touch
his nails so he will be
relaxed when you come to
clip his nails
3. Not to Do
• Don’t use a spray bottle of
water, or the garden hose as
punishment or you will not
be able to wash your puppy
with out a fuss.
• It is important your puppy
feel confident with water,
getting into a bath and
having water hosed or
poured over him
4. TO DO...
•Do make grooming fun, a
special time to bond with
your puppy. Be relaxed and
your puppy will be relaxed.
Always start and end with a
treat.
•Start brushing your puppy
for a short time, maybe
5minutes, and slowly
increase the time
5. Not To Do ..
•Don’t make grooming tools
something your puppy is
frightened of but don’t make them
toys either. Your puppy needs to
learn what to expect when you
bring out his brush and comb.
6. To Do ..
•Do make brushing and combing your
puppy something you do regularly.
Start with a few minutes and before
your puppy is stressed or resisting
stop, it’s important that fighting or
chewing the brush and comb doesn’t
become a game. Always give your
puppy his favourite treat as a reward
at the end of each session
7. Not To Do ..
•Don’t use your shampoo when
washing your puppy. Always use a
special Dog Shampoo, as human
shampoo has the wrong ph. balance for
your puppy’s sensitive skin. Pet
shampoos are made for dogs so they
are gentle and contain no harsh
chemicals or perfumes that might
cause allergic reactions
8. To Do ..
•Do clean your puppy’s ears
when you give him his weekly
bath. Always use a special Dog
Ear Cleaner and follow the
instructions on the bottle. There
are natural ear cleaners available
now that reduce the incidence of
causing the sensitive inner ear to
be harmed.
