3. About BSL
Sign language is a visual means of communicating using gestures, facial
expression, and body language.
Sign Language is used mainly by people who are Deaf or have hearing
impairments
BSL is the most common form of Sign Language in Britain
BSL is the preferred language of between 50,000-70,000 people within the UK
Recognised by the UK government as an official language in 2003

5. What’s involved in
Level 1?
Unit BSL101- Introduction to British Sign Language
To complete this unit learners must show they can understand basic language in
everyday situations. You can meet and greet, understand basic conversation and
numbers, give and follow simple directions and information
6. Why learn BSL
Most common form of Sign Language in Britain- Over 70,000 users!
Deaf equality- Reduces the communication barrier for deaf people
Estimates suggest 1-in-7 people in the UK experience some form of deafness-
That means you almost certainly know someone who has hearing loss. Remember,
it’s an invisible disability so you might not even realise
Better job prospects- Employers sometimes look for candidates that are bilingual
Make new friends- Whether it’s the friends you make in sign language
class or friends at the local deaf club, you’ll make some new friends for certain

7. Fingerspelling
Fingerspelling is a method of spelling words using
hand movements
It is used in sign language to spell out names of
people and places for which there is not a sign
British Sign Language uses a two-handed alphabet
However some other sign languages such as American
Sign Language (ASL) use a one-handed alphabet
8. BSL Level 1
The cost of this course is £274 which may be paid in full before the start of the course, or in instalments.
If you wish to pay in instalments this will involve a deposit of £74 before the start of the course which is not refundable if
you do not attend, followed by 4 monthly instalments of £50.
Assessment
This course can be taken just for fun – and it really is !
However, if you wish to be assessed to gain certification there is an additional charge of £17 for unit 101, £30 for unit
102 and £30 for unit 103 which will be payable to One to One Support Services when we register you for assessment.
Retakes will involve additional examination fees and a cost of £5 per individual session for ‘revision lessons’
Unit BSL101 is internally assessed by the teacher. Units BSL102 and BSL103 are externally assessed by a Signature
assessor.
