Olivia hopes to create a makeup brand for her final major project. She will design makeup products that will be presented on a website and advertised in a Valentine's Day themed video. The brand's aesthetic will be modern and minimalist, inspired by leading brands. Products will have soft, neutral tones to appeal to a diverse audience. For her previous project, Olivia designed a perfume but feels she can now better showcase her skills by designing multiple products and demonstrating her abilities with Photoshop and video editing software. She outlines a storyline for the Valentine's Day advertisement that will feature various scenes showing the products being used and their benefits.
2. Hopes for my project:
I hope to create a makeup brand as my FMP. This will include designing an array of makeup products which will be
presented in the form of a website publication. In addition to this I am going to film and direct an advertisement which
presents a Valentine’s Day themed makeup collection as the latest release the brand. All of my work will then be
displayed alongside social media concepts and aspirations of the brand.
The aesthetics of my brand will be inspired by the modern, minimalistic style made popular by leading makeup brands
on the market today. I will manufacture unique characteristics into the designs by ensuring the tone of the brand
remains consistent with my own signature colour palette and logo interpreted onto each product. The tones of each
product will remain soft and neutral, therefore the brand will steer closer to a more diverse audience than those which
are currently primarily female-focused. This will allow me to have more freedom when casting models for my brand as I
will interpret male and female models as the actors in my advertisement. My brand will shed a light on the importance
of steering away from the male gaze which has been so prominent in makeup advertisements in the past. I feel strongly
about topics such as this and aspire to design a brand which focuses entirely on a modern way forward in the cosmetics
industry.
For my FMP last year, I produced a perfume product by the name of ‘Euphoric’ by Jour Violet – a simple spin on word of
my own middle name. I was given the opportunity to expand my product design skills on Photoshop and I believe I did a
fair job at making a realistic perfume product come to life by my editing skills which I progressed through the workings
of this project. Along with this, I directed and starred in a video advertisement for the product in which I represented
the free feeling which the scent of the perfume brings by immersing myself with nature. However, I believe I lacked in
portraying my full capabilities and understanding with modern media during this project and did not research in depth
or explore more possible designs for the product which led me to not achieve the grades which I wished for.
Moving forward, I will work harder to display my Photoshop and Premier Pro skills by designing more than just one
product and testing my skills by doing so.
3. The ‘storyline’ of the my video advertisement will go something like this: A young girl opens a door and is presented
with a prettily packaged gift box; she rushes upstairs to try on one of the lip glosses in the mirror. As she lifts the product
there will be an annotation of the name of the product and its price etc. She stares into the mirror and begins to apply
the lipstick, the camera then transitions through the mirror and turns around to reveal an older version of the young girl
sat in the same position as the girl was, dressed as if she is ready to go on a date. The woman then stands up and the
camera transitions to the same woman sat in the car as she begins to spray herself with a perfume (also included in the
gift set). As the car drives off, the camera will transition yet again to a different girl applying a lip set onto her lips as she
then moved to her bed and writes a love letter which she goes on to post through the post box. The camera transitions
past the post box and reveals a couple sat in front of the television, crying with laughter as they are watching a funny
film. The camera will then focus a close up shot on the eyes of one of the people with an annotation of a review of a
mascara saying, “Completely tear proof!” as they are wearing a waterproof mascara - yet again included in the gift set.
Next, there is a transition into the kitchen where a man is baking some heart shaped cookies. He is working up a sweat,
so he begins to apply some mattifying translucent powder and he sneezes into the powder and the mist of powder
covers the camera lens. There is a final transition panning from the sky down to reveal a young boy walking up to the
house with a gift box in hand. He knocks on the door and there is a storyline 360 as the young girl from the beginning
opens the door and smiles into the camera. The moral of the advert is that love is all around and the wholesomeness
that Valentine’s Day can bring and how the makeup products can elevate anyone’s Valentine’s Day experience.
The tone of the advert will be joyful and wholesome as it will feature a classically adored love song as the backing track.
I will ensure that there are romantic tones adjusted to the lighting which I will colour grade myself once the videos are
trimmed together.
