4. Overview Medical Transcription (MT)
is the act of translating from oral to written form
(on paper or electronically) the record of a
person's medical history, diagnosis, prognosis,
and outcome in order to document patient care
and facilitate healthcare services. These
documents eventually become part of patients’
permanent files.
5. Purposes of Medical Transcription
1. Ancient cave writings attest to the earliest forms of healthcare
documentation. While the medium changed from metal plates to clay
tablets, to hieroglyphs on temple walls, to papyrus, to parchment, to paper,
and most recently to electronic files, the reasons for maintaining records
have always been the same—to record an individual's health care and the
achievements in medical science.
2. 2. Verbal dictation is by far the most common method for documenting and
reporting the results of examinations and procedures. Physicians generally
use either a cassette based voice dictation system or a digital voice dictation
system to record their findings. Dictating reports verbally not only allows
physicians to be more thorough in their reporting, it also saves them a great
deal of time.

1. A love of language. If you are person who loves words and
language, then this might be the right choice for you. Knowing and
understanding language is an important skill in profession.
2. Good Spelling Skills. Because the documents of a patient’s
healthcare story, you must have good spelling skills to be
successful.
3. Grammar. In addition to good spelling and loving language, it is
important to have good grammar skills. The people who dictate
medical reports do not always speak with best grammar skills.

4. The ability to work with deadlines. Everything in healthcare
depends on deadlines being met. If you are a person who works well
with meeting deadline and can successfully do that, then this maybe

a computer and have some good basic technology skills.

10. 9 Responsibilities of Medical Transcriptionist
1. Download audio files and accurately transcribe various types of
medical reports for different medical specialties and subspecialties
that include history and physical, SOAP note, emergency room (ER)
note, operative report, discharge summary, radiology report, etc.
2. Edit the medical reports accurately, utilizing correct punctuation,
grammar, and spelling.
3. Check for completeness of medical reports.
4. Accurately enter the patient demographics such as name, date of
birth, date of visit/service, gender, medical record number and
address.

5. Maintain a record or log of all the audio.
6. Compare the finalized report of quality analyst (QA) or physician
with own medical reports to perform quality checks.
7. Maintain a repository for new medical devices and drugs for
reference in the future.
8. In some hospitals, medical transcriptionist may also be needed to
maintain medical file records and charts.
9. Medical Transcriptionist may also be sometimes required to
perform various administrative duties like scheduling, appointments,
checking in patients, and answering phone calls.

13. Types of Transcription
Busines/ Financial Transcription: is the process of transcribing
recordings of AGMs, investor meetings and presentation, press
releases, interviews, seminars, and speeches, etc.
Legal Transcription: is the process of transcribing recordings of a
attorneys, court hearings and other legal professionals into legal
documents.
General Transcription: deals with the rest of the transcription apart
from the above and comprises of transcribing academic lectures,
speeches, etc. MT:
Visual Medical Transcription: since Indian doctors are not used to
dictating medical reports but rather write down the medical charts,
visual medical transcription is mostly prevalent in Indian Hospitals.
