Introductory Glossary
Ketuvim: Is the third and final section of the Bible (Tanach)—the Written Torah.
Masoretic Text: Derived from masorah, meaning "tradition"; the Masoretes were the rabbis in ninth-century
Palestine who sought to preserve the traditional text of the Bible (hence called the Masoretic text), which is still used
in contemporary synagogues. The Masoretes were scholars who encouraged Bible study and attempted to achieve
uniformity by establishing rules for correcting the text in matters of spelling, grammar and pronunciation. Masoretic
(adj.) means that something is in accordance with the masorah.
Nevi'im: Biblical writings and stories of Prophets
Tanach: The bible; acronym for Torah (i.e., the Five Books of Moses), Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (the
“Writings”; i.e., the Hagiographa).
Targum: Generally used to designate Aramaic translations of the Jewish scriptures.
Torah: The Five Books of Moses (The Bible); (b) the overall body of Jewish religious teachings encompassing the
whole body of Jewish law, practice and tradition.

2. Torah
These are the generations of Noah, Noah was a righteous man he was perfect in his generations; Noah
walked with God (Genesis 6:9)
And the Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, for it is you that I have seen as
a righteous man before Me in this generation (Genesis 7:1)
And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: "And I, behold I am setting up My covenant with
you and with your seed after you (Genesis 9:8-9)
And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant, which I am placing between Me and between you, and
between every living soul that is with you, for everlasting generations. My rainbow I have placed in the
cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Myself and the earth (Genesis 9:12-13)
And God said to Noah: "This is the sign of the covenant that I have set up, between Myself and between
all flesh that is on the earth (Genesis 9:17)
These three were the sons of Noah, and from these, the entire earth spread out. (Genesis 9:19)

When I had not yet formed you in the womb, I knew you, and when you had not yet emerged from the
womb, I had appointed you; a prophet to the nations I made you (Jeremiah 1:5)
Pour out Your wrath upon the nations that do not know You and upon the families that have not called in
Your name, for they have devoured Jacob and consumed him and destroyed him, and have wasted his
dwelling (Jeremiah 10:25)

Now should I not take pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are many more than one hundred

And it will come to pass that everyone left of the nations who came up against Jerusalem will go up from
year to year to prostrate himself to the King, the Lord of Hosts, and to celebrate the festival of
Tabernacles (Zachary 14:16)
And it shall be that whoever of all the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to prostrate

The Lord is in His Holy Temple. The Lord-His throne is in Heaven; His eyes see, His pupils try the sons of
men (Psalms 11:4)
The Lord tries the righteous, but His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence (Psalms 11:5)
The Lord in Heaven looked down upon the sons of men to see whether there is a man of understanding,
who seeks the Lord (Psalms 14:2)
Their line goes forth throughout the earth, and their words are at the end of the world; for the sun He
made a tent therein (Psalms 19:5)
All the ends of the earth shall remember and return to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall
