Joseph and Anna Baum
Celebrate 70 Years of Marriage!
For Joseph and Anna Baum, the numbers add up nicely.
70 years of marriage, 2 children, 5 grandchildren, 3
step-grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren equal an
amazing life together.
It all started in 1941, when Joe and Anna met through a
mutual friend at Anna’s 18th birthday party. According to
Linda Buset, their daughter, “My parents began dating but in
1943 Dad left to
serve in the Army
during WWII.
He served in
Germany, France
and Belgium. He
arrived home
in April of 1946
and they were
married that
June. While Dad was away, Mom worked in the war plants
like Rosie the Riveter, waiting for him to return. My father is a
very proud WWII veteran who loves his country.”
Linda said, “They purchased their first home on Hamilton
Place in 1958 and lived there until my father retired. Then
they downsized to an apartment in Nutley.”
When Linda asked her parents why they stayed in Nutley
they said, “We feel Nutley is a very quiet and safe town
where people care about their neighbors. We have no desire
to go anywhere else. We spent most of our retirement years
traveling, but now we are content to enjoy this town and the
things it offers us.”
Linda said, “My parents believe Nutley is a wonderful town,
with caring and concerned neighbors. The town has been
very good to both of them, and they are grateful for that.”
Not only do Joe and Anna enjoy life in Nutley, but four

generations of family still
reside here. Linda Buset
and her husband, Butch, are
actively involved in town,
while her brother, Joseph
Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, live
in Pennsylvania. Three of
their grandchildren, Eric
and his wife, Julie, Joanna
and her husband, Brian, and
Jonathan and his fiancée,
Eileen, all live in Nutley.
Linda gives us an update
on some other family
members: “Great grandchil-
dren, Joseph, Nicholas, and
Samantha are in the Nutley
public school system and participate in town sports and scouting. Two of them
attend Yantacaw School and one attends Spring Garden School. The youngest great
grandchild will begin kindergarten in the fall.”
Family is very important to both Joe and Anna. Linda gives us a little insight into
Joe’s childhood and why family is so precious to him. “Dad was raised in an orphan-
age which makes him appreciate the value of family, friends, and neighbors. He
worked six days a week to take care of his family, but Sunday was family day. He
always cooked the family breakfast before church then he took us all out for the
day.”
Linda said, “Since my dad my raised in an orphanage, his real last name is not
Baum. We are going to do a DNA test on him to see what his heritage might be.”
Joe was also recognized for a very unique accomplishment. He had never taken
a sick day from his job at Harrison Supply Company in East Newark. As a reward for
40 years of perfect attendance, he was given an all-expense paid, one-week trip to

Hawaii for himself and his wife. He was interviewed on two major tele-
vision networks and many newspaper articles were written regarding
this achievement.
Joe and Anna had pursued several hobbies over the years. Linda
said, “My mother enjoyed a ceramics class every week and Dad’s
hobbies included bowling, poker, and blackjack. He loved to bowl
and never missed a bowling night. His claim to fame was making a
7/10 split and his highest game was 270. He never made that 300 he
was looking for all those years, but the 7/10 split earned him a badge
he is very proud to show anyone.”
However, at 95 and 93, their hobbies have dwindled down to going
out to eat in restaurants, especially the Nutley Diner where they
know every waiter and waitress. Joe and Anna have been members
of Vincent United Methodist Church in Nutley for 58 years. Joseph
served as a Trustee in the 1950s. At 95 years old, Joe can be seen
walking all around town and participating in the senior lunch program
and other events.
Interestingly, Linda tells us that Joe has a specific goal: “He plans to
live to his 101st birthday and party like a rock star alongside his wife
and family.”
On June 8, 2016, this couple will celebrate 70 years of marriage.
Their life together is truly a testament of love and faithfulness. Four
generations call Nutley home and have contributed to the distinctive
family and community spirit of our town.
Happy Anniversary Joe and Anna!

8. 8 Nutley Neighbors
There are three excellent reasons to seek orthopedic
treatment right here in Nutley: Dr. Frank Femino, Dr.
Stephen Ducey, and Dr. Seth Queler. Together, these highly
skilled physicians form a group practice that has literally
transformed the lives of thousands of patients suffering from
a variety of orthopedic conditions.
The Femino-Ducey-Queler Orthopaedic Group specializes
in joint replacement, sports medicine, and foot and ankle
surgery. But these doctors differentiate themselves in a very
special way.
“We have a boutique-style practice with each patient
receiving individualized attention,” Dr. Femino explains.
“As a whole, medicine has become impersonal and that’s
not the type of medicine I dreamed of practicing. Each of
the doctors, as well as the entire staff, seeks to make every
person feel special.”
Additionally, each physician in the Femino-Ducey-Queler
Orthopaedic Group is distinctively skilled in his area of
expertise. Dr. Femino contrasts the older style of medicine,
“in which all doctors were generalists but now, all are spe-
cialists. In this group, we even have sub-specialties, which
provide a higher level of competence and care.”
Dr. Femino specializes in adult reconstruction surgery
and hip and knee replacement. He has had much success
in performing surgeries that are considered “high risk” as
well as those rarely attempted or compromised by previous
surgeries.
Dr. Ducey specializes in sports medicine and arthros-
copy of the shoulder and knee. He has been recognized for
his expertise in performing minimally invasive procedures,
resulting in quicker recovery and less pain.
Dr. Queler specializes in treating adult and adolescent foot
and ankle problems. His training includes the conservative
and surgical care of both traumatic injuries as well as elec-
tive reconstruction of adult foot and ankle disorders.
The Femino-Ducey-Queler Orthopaedic Group relocated
to Nutley from Belleville in 2014. Dr. Femino said, “We
love the Nutley location. It’s easily accessible with plenty
of parking.” But the building itself has an interesting story
behind it.
Dr. Femino explains: “I have always had a soft spot in
my heart for veterans. Our practice is in a former American
Legion Hall. Before moving in, we received permission to
keep the monument that honored veterans. We installed a
new flagpole and lighting. On Memorial Day, there is a cere-
mony on the front lawn with a five-gun salute.”
Each of the doctors in this practice also specializes in
another important aspect of medicine: understanding. Dr.
Queler said, “Our philosophy is to help people feel better.
I know from personal experience what it’s like to be in pain.
When I was recovering from back surgery, I experienced
things through the perspective of a patient. This helped me
to understand my patients on a deeper level and to compas-
sionately address their concerns.”
The entire staff is also very helpful in guiding patients
through the maze of insurance claims. Dr. Femino said, “You
don’t have to go to the City for specialized care; the City has
come to you.” Right here in Nutley are a team of orthopedic
surgeons with the highest levels of skill and compassion. In
fact, Dr. Femino said that the most common thing a patient
says at their one-month checkup after surgery is: “I should
have done it sooner.”
That’s high praise, indeed.

Directions
Lightly coat 12 regular or 6 large paper-lined
muffin cups with cooking spray so the muffins
don’t stick. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa, bak-
ing powder, baking soda and salt.
In another medium bowl, whisk the eggs until
lemon in color; then, whisk in the cooled but-
ter, brown sugar, milk, oil and vanilla.
Quickly stir the wet ingredients into the dry
ingredients until just moistened; fold in the
chocolate chips.
Fill the muffin cups about two thirds of the
way full and bake for 22-28 or 30-35 minutes,
depending on the size of the pan, or until a
toothpick comes out clean. Remove from pan
after 15 minutes to a wire cooling rack.
To avoid drying out, store in an airtight con-
tainer and do not reheat.

NUTLEY HISTORY
Annie Oakley,
Nutley’s Greatest
Sharpshooter
By Barry Lenson, Nutley Museum Art Director
Have you walked into the Nutley Post Office and seen
“The Return of Annie Oakley,” a mural that shows the
famous sharpshooter riding into town? The mural was painted
by Paul Chapman in 1941. Even though Chapman was not a
Nutley artist, his mural is one of our town’s treasures.
Why was Annie Oakley, a famous performer who starred in
Buffalo Bill’s wild west rodeo shows, riding into Nutley? Let’s
take a closer look.
Who Was Annie Oakley?
Annie Oakley was born in Greenville, Ohio in 1860. Her
mother was later widowed and her family was not wealthy.
From a very young age, Annie began to shoot rabbits, squir-
rels and other small game for the dinner table. When Annie
was only five or six years old, people noticed that when she
picked up a rifle, her shooting skills bordered on the super-
natural. Her talent was discovered when she was 15, when a
sharpshooter named Frank Butler arrived in town with a wild
west show. He offered $100 to anyone who could beat him
in a contest of marksmanship. Annie entered and she won. A
year later, Annie and Butler married and were soon featured
performers in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, which toured
America and Europe.
According to a contemporary account of one performance:
“At thirty paces she could split a playing card held edge-on,
she hit dimes tossed into the air, she shot cigarettes from her
husband’s lips, and a playing card being thrown into the air,
she riddled it before it touched the ground.”
How Did Annie Get to Nutley?
In 1892, Annie and her husband were performing with the
Eaton Stone Circus, a traveling troupe that had its winter
headquarters on Kingsland Road in town, on what is now
property owned by
Hoffmann-La Roche. They
loved the town and built
a house at 302 Grant
Avenue that they could
return to between tours.
They only owned the
house until 1904, then
moved on. In 1937, it was
demolished and replaced
by two brick homes that
now occupy the site.
Oakley died in 1926, but
she is still revered as one
of Nutley’s most important
citizens.

Scholars from around
the country visit the

artifacts that were owned by Annie. We even have a penny

Nancy is a legendary Nutleyite who worked at the Board of
Education for many years, raised her children in town, and is

portion of the proceeds
will benefit the Nutley

As in the past, the Chamber turned to
Linda McDonnell’s Nutley High School

submissions, the 5K Committee chose an
image designed by Margaret Russo, a senior.
Margaret’s design will appear on the 5K

My Story By Emily Holden
Ididn’t want it to define me. Inevitably, it had to. The six-
inch scar on the back of my leg is a constant reminder of
everything I endured. A flick of a switch and life is changed
forever. Fear and panic set in after I heard hundreds of
stories about athletes that were never the same and never
got back in time to play. Certainly, I did not want this trauma
to happen to me, but it has made me who I am today. I have
defied many odds and have proven many people wrong. My
identity is no longer the girl that was injured; I am now the
girl that overcame it all and is back better than ever.
My story begins freshman year as a player on the varsity
softball team during a game in late May. After hitting the ball
and sprinting towards first base, I heard and felt a popping
in my left leg. I took another step, heard it again, and hit
the ground hard. It appeared as though I had been shot. An
indescribable pain from the top of my leg to the tips of my
toes overcame me. An MRI determined that my hamstring
had broken off a piece of my pelvis including three tendons,
which was now lying on my sciatic nerve. My injury was an
extremely rare case and many doctors would not dare to
operate on me. I was in agony, physically and mentally.
I had surgery on Halloween of my sophomore year and
started physical therapy immediately. Therapy sessions were
not easy; the rigors of stretching and manipulating my leg
caused intense and, at times, unbearable pain. But just like
anything else,
perseverance
and dedication
was the answer
and things would
eventually start to
fall into place.
Spring arrived
and that meant
softball season
was finally here. I
was still going to
physical therapy
as much as pos-
sible and the
lingering question
of “Will I be ready to play?” was haunting me. Ultimately,
I passed that test and was able to play! I even received
the “Bo Jackson Comeback Player of the Year Award.” My
message is simple: hard work pays off. The sacrifices that
I’ve made and will continue to make have been worth it
all. All the little tiny victories made this journey a battle to
be won and I am truly humbled by this curveball life has
thrown me. A fire has been instilled in me; a solid mindset
and work ethic that will never burn out. This experience has
Emily Holden, Captain, Pitcher/1B, 2nd Team All-State
(Group 3), 1st Team All-County and 1st Team All-Conference.

With the summer season right around the corner, now
is a great time to try out a new look. Bring those
cute pictures you’ve been saving of fun hairstyles and nail
art into the salon and try them out for yourself. You can even
use this visit as a springboard into a fresh look that’s both
stylish and healthy for your hair and nails.
The upcoming hot weather is perfect for experiment-
ing with shorter hairstyles like a pixie cut or a long bob.
Asking your stylist for a fresh summer cut is good for both
your appearance and your hair’s health. A good haircut,
whether a big change or just a trim, gets rid of split ends
and damage so your hair is healthy and ready to deal with
summer heat and humidity.
Summer’s relaxed mood offers the ideal time to rest your
hair from damaging heat-styling. Instead of blow-drying
and flat-ironing your way to perfection, let your locks air-dry
and style them into a loose braid or bun. Try asking your
stylist for a lower-maintenance cut which requires less styling
and product. Low-maintenance hair lets you look your best
without getting in the way of impromptu parties with family
and friends.
Don’t forget your tips and toes when testing your new
style! The summer’s beach trips and barbeques means your
fingers and toes get an escape from mittens and boots. Do
you find yourself tempted to try fun polish colors and nail
art? Give them a go at your next pedicure appointment.
Accent nails are another popular way
to play with splashes of color or glitter
while remaining work-friendly.
Once you and your stylist have
decided on that new summer look, you
have to keep it looking good between
salon visits. Summer’s hot weather and
trips to the beach or pool can dry your
hair out. To counteract this, make sure to ask your stylist
to recommend a conditioner or moisturizing product. You
might think dry, brittle nails are a winter problem, but the
summer heat and exposure to chlorine in pools or saltwa-
ter affects them too. Just like your hair, dry nails also benefit
from moisturizing. Even with polish on, you can massage
creams or oils around the cuticles to give your nails the
moisture they need to prevent peeling and breaking.
Switching up your hair and nail style offers a great
opportunity to refresh both your look and care routine. A
low-maintenance haircut and a cute mani-pedi is an excel-
lent way to celebrate the summer season. Who knew
treating yourself to a salon appointment could actually be
healthy for your hair and nails?

Answering your Financial Planning Questions
Contributed by Michael S. Cocco of AXA Advisors LLC
FINANCIAL PLANNING
Question: With all the
drops for stocks, I’m
nervous about my
investments. I’m
about 60 percent
equities and 40
percent fixed
income, all mutual
funds, and I have 15
years until retirement.
Should I just stay put?
Let me begin by saying that the only way I, or anyone
else, would be able to give someone suitable guid-
ance regarding their investments would be to sit with them
one-on-one and evaluate that person’s particular circum-
stances. For now, I’ll try to give some general information
that people can keep in mind.
One of the biggest considerations concerning invest-
ments should be your personal time horizon for those
monies. The current market volatility we have been experi-
encing over these last few months has given many investors
cause for concern, but if you have a long-term time horizon
(especially if that is 10 years or more), this may actually
have very little impact on your retirement nest egg, even
though it may not feel like it now. If you have 15 years until
retirement, hopefully you are trying to contribute some
money each year to your retirement accounts. Consistently
investing a set amount of money into a set investment at
pre-determined intervals is a concept known as “dollar
cost averaging” and is a popular strategy for some people
looking to invest for the long-term.
Although dollar cost averaging seeks to lower the average
price paid for an investment over time, it does not guaran-
tee any profit and will not act as a protection against loss in
declining markets. If you are interested in this strategy, you
should consider your ability to consistently invest funds, par-
ticularly in declining markets.
Regarding this particular question, as someone who has
15 years until retirement, one could argue that 60% equi-
ties and 40% fixed income may be too conservative. Fixed
income investments, or bonds, have a role in a portfolio to
help control volatility and provide a measure of stability.
However, they have a long-term historical return that is far
less than equities (stocks) (Source: Ibbotson/Morningstar).
You may be better served with a higher percentage of equi-
ties in your portfolio, and lessen that equity exposure as
you near retirement.
Also, it is important to note that the long-term average
annual return for stocks have been roughly 8% per year
over the last 40 years (Source: LPL Financial) but the stock
market very rarely returns near 8% in any one year. Of
course, past performance cannot guarantee future results,
and there are many years that have returned much more
than that, but also many years that have returned much
less. This unpredictability is why “staying the course” is
often the best strategy. I always tell my clients that in these
periods of volatility, let’s not let these short-term market
fluctuations interfere with our long-term strategy.

Imagine if your
smile made you
proud. Imagine if
your teeth were
straight, white, and
healthy. Imagine if
you felt confident
and comfortable
meeting new people.
Unfortunately,
it’s almost impossible to imagine feeling like this if you’re
embarrassed by your teeth and ashamed of your smile.
Instead, chances are you don’t smile much and when you
do you probably try to hide your smile behind your hand.
It’s only natural, but that doesn’t keep it from being a real
problem. Some of the people you meet probably just think
you’re shy. Others may think you’re cold, distant, or even
arrogant. It’s not fair, but, sadly, it’s the way some people
react.
An independent study on behalf of the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry confirms just how important
a smile can be. Research conducted by a social psychol-
ogist, indicated that 99.7% of Americans believed an
attractive smile is an important social asset.
The researchers asked participants to look at a series of
photos showing some people with less than perfect smiles
(none with major problems like missing teeth) and others
who had undergone cosmetic dentistry. Then they asked
the participants for their opinion about what the people in
the photos might be like. In every case, the people whose
smiles had been improved by cosmetic dentistry were rated
not only more attractive, but also more intelligent, interest-
ing, kinder, and more successful.
When you think about all the benefits of having a more
attractive smile, it’s very easy to see why cosmetic dentistry
has become so popular. If you’re like most people, you may
wonder if it’s right for you. Will the problems really disap-
pear? Will the results look natural? Those are smart and
sensible questions. After all, cosmetic dentistry is a true art
and getting it right involves all sorts of esthetic decisions.
Give us a call and we’ll arrange your personal sneak
preview of what cosmetic dentistry could do for you.

The Kerry Villa Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) fam-
ily-run charitable organization created in 2013 to honor
the memory of Kerry Villa, their daughter, sister, and aunt.
Kerry's strong love for both children and animals, as well
as her passion to help those in need ignited their quest to
create this foundation in her name. The Villa family members
are longtime residents of Nutley and have been at their resi-
dence for 45 years.
The Kerry Villa Foundation was established with the goal
of easing the financial burden facing families of children with
medical needs and have partnered with the Tom Couglin Jay
Fund Foundation. This non-profit organization's mission is
to help families battle childhood cancer by providing com-
prehensive financial, emotional, and practical support. This
allows parents to focus solely on their child's well-being.
In addition to
this, the Kerry
Villa Foundation
has been able
to support chil-
dren on the
autism spec-
trum, and has
established an
educational
scholarship at
Nutley High
School to
assist young
adults who
have chosen
to pursue
a career in
nursing.
This past
year the foundation was also able to contribute to the
Nutley Family Service Bureau, to help local residents who
are in need.
Their mission continues to be inspired by Kerry and her
love of animals. With their dedication to improve the lives of
neglected cats and dogs, the Kerry Villa Foundation donates
part of its proceeds to no-kill animal shelters in an effort
to provide necessary veterinary care, and to find adoptive
loving homes for abandoned and abused animals.
Each year they continue to honor Kerry's memory with
their annual golf fundraiser. This event will be held on June
13, 2016 at The Glen Ridge Country Club in Glen Ridge
New Jersey. Registration is open for anyone interested in
attending. All the information can be found at: www.kerrys-
katsandkids.com
Everyone is welcome to attend.
