I. PURPOSE
To establish a uniform procedure for the proper handling of animals designated as “Special
Attention”.
II. POLICY
Animals impounded by Orange County Animal Care Services (OCACS) as Special
Attention(s) shall be processed in accordance with the procedures outlined in this document.
Special attention is required in these cases due to potential legal actions, evidence and/or
documented assessments that are time sensitive, and other circumstances requiring unique
monitoring and tracking.

Applicable to all OCACS Kennel Services staff.

VI. DEFINITIONS
Special Attention refers to any animal which has been impounded under the following
circumstances:
- Police Confiscate
- Police Assist (may include, but not limited to: owner arrest, owner in hospital,
owner deceased or vehicle abandonment)
- Vicious Investigations
- Cruelty Investigations
VII. PROCEDURE
1. Staff shall verify that all information regarding Special Attention animals is accurately
entered into the Chameleon Kennel Window.

2. Information relating to the impoundment of the animal shall be included to determine
retention time, record owner verification and notification and veterinary services
received.
3. “Hold” requests shall be marked as “Special Attention” ensuring that all memos are
attached to the Animal Identification number (AID).
4. No Special Attention animal shall be euthanized, returned to owner or otherwise
disposed of without a medical review by an OCACS Clinic Veterinarian and approval
from the Operations Officer.
