I. PURPOSE
To establish a uniformed procedure for the safety and security of quarantined animals at
Orange County Animal Care Services (OCACS).
II. POLICY
OCACS shall adhere to the established procedures for processing quarantined animals.
III. SCOPE
Applicable to all OCACS staff responsible for the security of quarantined animals.

VII. PROCEDURE
A. Care shall be taken when placing an animal in a quarantine cage or kennel. All locks
shall be securely in place and the door in proper working order. Any signs of tampering
or damage shall be brought to the attention of supervision. If for any reason the areas
designated for quarantine cannot be used, a Kennel Supervisor or Veterinary Services
staff member shall be contacted and direct where to place the animal.
The housing of an animal under quarantine is as follows:
1. Dogs: housed in kennels 1-15 and 54-68.
2. Cats: housed in the “QT” cages in the east side of the catwalk.
3. Live bats: shall remain in a can clearly marked as “LIVE BAT”.

a. During the PM shift, the can shall be placed in a receiving cage.
b. During the AM shift, the bat shall be taken directly to the clinic.
4. All other animals shall be clearly tagged and placed in the tag-morgue or on a
transport cart and placed in Station III.
