CARBON & there is present in coal gas, all
burning devices, climbs mines, combastant
engines & exhaust gas vehicle

7. Hemoglobin
1. Carbon monoxide has 200 - 300 times
greater afinity for HB than oxygen &therefor
it produces COHB
Hence, reducing the oxygen content of
blood. & tissue thus act as chemical
ASPHEXIENT.
2. CO is also exert direct toxic effects by
binding with cellular cytochromes.

9. MYOGLOBIN

CO also bind with cardiac
myoglobin. It has high affinity
for myoglobin, 60 time greater
than oxygen.
It will affect the cardiac output
& hypotension resulting in brain
ischemia.

10. SIGN & SYMPTOMS
NO COHB % SIGN & SYMPTOMS
1. 0-10 % NO appreciable features
2. 10-20 % Breathlessness, headache, flushed skin
3. 20-30 % Throbbing headache, buzzing in ear, muscular weakness, incordination & dyspnea
4. 30-40 % Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of memory, mental confusion, dim vision, collapse & convulsion
5. 40-50 % All the above features are intestified staggering gait, palpitation, & ratinal hemorrhages
6. 50-60 % Asphexial convulsion, coma, & above features are intensified.
7. 60-70 % Respiratory paralysis & death
8. > 70 % If rescude rapidly fattled due to respiration arrest.

11. FATAL DOSE : - 40
– 70% Formation
of COHB is fatal.
Fatal period : -
from 5 – 20
minutes.

4. IV mannitol or
dextrose given to
reduce weakness
5. symptomatic
treatment.

13. P.M. APPEARANCE :-
1. SKIN is bright & chilly red
2. froth at mouth & nose
3.all viscera are cheery red.
4. cherry red blood
5. hemorrhages at lungs, heart, brain.
6. oedema of lung & brain
7. % of COHB is > 50 %

14. Medico legal aspects :-
1. it is very popular suicidal agent in western countries
but in India it is used as a accidental poisoning.​
2. with chlorine it forms carbonite chloride phosgins gas
very poisonous.​
3. city dwellers & smokers may have 3 – 5% of COHB
in bood
