Different drugs can
affect different people in
different ways. The exact
effects of drugs depend
on a number of things,

7. THE WAY A DRUG EFFECTS YOU
DEPENDS ON:
The drug itself
• what type of drug it is
• how you took it
• how much you took
• how strong or pure it is
• how often you take it
Your own body
• your gender
• physical size
• mood
• personality
• expectations
• how recently you ate
• your general health
• have you become tolerant?
• what other drugs you took with it — for
example, alcohol
8. DRUG DEPENDENCE
Physical dependence - used to having the drug in their system that they
need the drug to feel ‘normal’. If they don’t get the drug they feel very
sick.
Psychological dependence - feel they need to use drugs to enjoy or get
through events like parties and other social occasions.
DRUG TOLERANCE
A drug is taken regularly over a period of time. Their body becomes used
to the drug and need to take more to feel the same or similar effects.
WITHDRAWAL
When a person is dependent on a drug and they stop taking it or reduce
the amount they use, they may experience pain, illness, anxiety and
cravings.
