• “ A settlement in a new county… a body of people who settle in a new locality,
forming a community subject to or connected with their parent state ; the
community so formed, consisting of the original settlers and their descendants and
successors, as long as the connection with the parent state is kept up.”
3. WHAT IS POSTCOLONIALISM ?
• Postcolonialism (or often post-colonialism) deals with the effects of colonization on
cul- tures and societies. Unlike “colonialism,” this term is of much more recent
provenance, emerging in the late 1970s to describe a range of literary and cultural
analysis of colonized and formerly colonized societies.
