Jacksonville’s Youth Ignites the SPARK District
To learn more about the SPARK Grant program please visit the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville on
their facebook page or their website (http://www.culturalcouncil.org/grant-programs/spark2016/)
The idea for this project was born in 2015 at the One Spark Crowd-Funding Festival here in
Jacksonville. My project for One Spark was called “Murals for Jacksonville’s Youth and
Beyond”, and if I won I promised to use the money to paint murals in as many schools in
Jacksonville as I could. Unfortunately I did not win, but it lead to many great opportunities
and positive relationships with people and organizations in our community.
One Spark 2015
One of the best relationships that came from the One Spark festival was that
with the Parks and Recreation Department of Jacksonville. They loved the
idea of the kid’s mural and hired me to do a series of kid’s murals for their
summer program SNL Summer Night Lights. There were three different mural
events for the summer program as well as one for Art in the Park, here are
photos from each of them!

2016 SPARK Grant sponsored by
Florida Blue & provided by the Cultural
Council of Greater Jacksonville
In 2015 I found out about the
SPARK Grant and decided to
create a proposal for a kid’s
mural project. My project
consists of a series of 4 kid’s
mural festivals that would each
be held in a different location
within the SPARK District of
Downtown Jacksonville.
I won! I was awarded this grant
to carry out my project! So let
me tell you all about it.
The 2016 Jax Kid’s Mural Festivals sponsored by
the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and
Florida Blue.
What is this project all about?
This project is about providing the children of
our community with an opportunity to express
themselves freely, with no judgment or
limitation. This freedom of expression builds
creativity in a child which leads to a stronger
sense of self. A sense of self establishes
confidence in a child which is crucial in leading a
successful life.
This project is also about bringing all of the
children and families in our community
together in hopes that they will form new
relationships and make new friends.
In the same way that children and families will
create new bonds we hope that businesses and
organizations that work with the youth will be
able to network and work together in the
future.
Essentially this project is about uniting our
community and providing a fun and creative
event for people to enjoy.
Locations
The Jax Kid’s Mural Festivals will be held in 4 different locations within the SPARK
District of Downtown Jacksonville. Here is a map to help you understand where
this is.
So far we have Hemming Park, The Times Union Center (along the River Front),
Main Street Park, and one more to be decided upon. The locations are still not set
in stone, but our first location will hopefully be Hemming Park!
SPARK District
Festival Layout
The layout will of course not
match this exactly every time, but
this is for you to better understand
the idea that we have for the
festivals. There will be three walls
that each stand 8 feet tall and 20
feet long. Children will be painting
on both sides of these walls
throughout the event. There will
be multiple different businesses
and organizations that work with
the youth (such as yours) that will
have a booth set up at each
festival.
Our friends at Instaramp (portable
skateboard ramp) will be setting
up a ramp and doing
skateboarding lessons to all who
are interested. Yoga 4 Change will
be hosting yoga sessions
throughout each event as well for
children and families.
There will be seating and food
options available of course at
every event.
Here is a very basic example of a mural festival
layout from an aerial view.
Collaborators
This project has A LOT of collaborators and is open and free to businesses and
organizations in Jacksonville that work with children and/or families. It is free to
come and set up a tent/booth to showcase your business or organization!
Here are some examples of the groups who will be a part of this project!

Jax Kid’s Mural Festival Outreach Program
A small portion of the funding for the Jax Kid’s Mural Festival will be set
aside to bring the festival to underprivileged schools and at-risk youth in
Jacksonville so that children who would not normally be able to attend the
festivals can still participate! Whenever possible, I and my team will bring
one mural wall to a school in Jacksonville and have a small mural festival
for the students. We hope to achieve enough funding to be able to do this
once a month! The schools will also be able to keep the completed murals
to put on display around their campus. We hope that this outlet of free
expression and unrestrained flow of creativity will provide students with a
life changing experience. I also hope that having their murals on display
around their school will brighten the day and make them feel proud of
their work. After all, they are not judged or limited in this project.
Thank you for taking the time to view this slide show and
consider this event! I am extremely excited about this year
and these four kid’s mural festivals. I am especially excited
about the outreach program and bettering the lives of at-
risk youth in our community. I look forward to collaborating
with so many of the great businesses and organizations
here in Jacksonville. If you have any further questions about
this program please feel free to text, call, or email me at
any time! Thank you so much for your interest in our
festival, and I hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
