JULIO VINAS - MANAGER
The 2014 season marks Vinas’ second as Barons manager. In his first year at the helm in Birmingham, Vinas led the
club to a record of 77-63, a First Half North Division title and the franchise’s 14th Championship.Vinas was named to
the coaching staff for the World All-Stars at the 2013 Futures Game at Citi Field and was rated as the Top Managerial
Prospect in the Southern League by Baseball America.
Entering his fourth season as a coach in the White Sox
organization, Vinas previously managed for Class A Winston-
Salem in 2011 and Class A Kannapolis in 2012.Vinas was named
the 67th manager in Barons history prior to the 2013 season.
Vinas began his baseball career with the White Sox after being
selected in the 33rd round of the 1991 Free-Agent Draft. In his
5th Minor League season, Vinas was promoted to Double-A
Birmingham and spent the entire season as a Baron. For the
year, Vinas hit .269 (100-for-372) with six home runs, 47 runs
scored and 61 RBI as the Barons.
Following his retirement after
11 Minor League seasons, Vinas began his coaching career in 2001 as part of the
Orioles organization as the Field Coach with the Gulf Coast Orioles. From 2002-04
Vinas served as a Roving Hitting Instructor for the Orioles before spending six
seasons as their Minor League Hitting Coordinator from 2005-10. His first
managerial opportunity came in 2011 when he returned to the White Sox
organization as the manager of the Class A Winston-Salem Dash. Over four
managerial seasons, Vinas has compiled a career record of 207-212.

2013 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Barons captured the 2013 Southern League Championship in a thrilling five-game series
against the Mobile BayBears. The title was the 14th in franchise history and the first
since the 2002 season.

The 2013 season proved to be one of the most memorable in the long and storied history of Birmingham
baseball as the Barons celebrated their return to downtown and the opening of Regions Field with the
franchise’s 14th championship. Under the leadership of first-year manager Julio Vinas, the Barons went
77-63 including a league-best 44-26 mark in the first half, earning the North Division crown and stamping
their ticket to the postseason for the 10th time in the last 14 seasons. In the playoffs, the Barons defeated the
Tennessee Smokies and Mobile BayBears in a pair of thrilling five-game series’ to capture their seventh title in
the Southern League era.
MARCUS SEMIEN
Put on a virtuoso performance in his first season at the Double-A level hitting .290 (114-for-393) with 15 home runs, 16 doubles, two
triples,90runsscoredand49RBIin105games.HewasnamedtotheSouthernLeagueMidandPost-SeasonAll-Starteamsandearned
league MVP honors following the season, becoming just the third Baron to receive the award. He was particularly dominant during
the month of July, hitting .372 (35-for-94) with eight home runs, nine doubles, 28 runs scored, 20 RBI and 29 walks in 26 games. He
was named Southern League Player of the Week for the period from July 22nd-28th, hitting .583 (14-for-24) with four home runs, a
triple, three doubles, 10 runs scored, 11 RBI and 12 walks. He was promoted to Class AAA Charlotte on August 1st, at which point he
ranked among the league-leaders in multiple categories including ranking first in runs, walks (84), on-base percentage (.420), total
bases (190), tied for first in hits (114), tied for fifth in home runs and sixth in batting average. Semien made his major league debut
on September 4th and finished out the season with the White Sox, playing in 21 games.
ERIK JOHNSON
Johnson lived up to his lofty billing as the organization’s No. 4 prospect, going 8-2 with an ERA of 2.23 (21 ER/84.2 IP), three
CG’s and 74 strikeouts in 14 starts while ranking among the league leaders in wins (1st), opponents average (1st), WHIP (1st),
K’s (3rd) and ERA (4th). Johnson was especially dominant at home, going 5-1 with a 1.06 ERA in seven starts at Regions Field. He
was elected to the Southern League Mid-Season All-Star team and named Barons Pitcher of the Year following the season. He
was promoted to Class AAA Charlotte prior to the start of the second half on and made his big league debut on September 4th
against the New York Yankees.
DAN BLACK
The talented switch-hitter enjoyed a productive season hitting .290 (130-for-449) with a team-best 17 home runs, 70 runs scored
and 83 RBI in 133 games. He was named to the Southern League Mid and Post-Season All-Star teams and ranked among the
league leaders in numerous categories including walks (1st, 91), RBI (2nd), on-base percentage (2nd, .411), average (T-3rd) and
slugging percentage (5th, .470).
NICK McCULLY
Began the season in the bullpen but was inserted in the starting rotation after a string of injuries. As a starter, McCully was
instrumental in the team’s first half success, going 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 starts including a string of 18 consective scoreless
innings that spanned four starts from May 9th-June 2nd. He was named Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 20-26 and was
elected to the Mid-Season All-Star Game.
MICAH JOHNSON
Promoted to Birmingham on August 29th after amassing a minor league-best 83 steals between Class A Kannapolis andWinston-
Same. In 131 games betweeen Class A Kannapolis and Class A Winston-Salem and Birmingham, Johnson hit .312 (167-for-536)
while leading all of baseball in steals (84) and ranking among the Minor League leaders in triples (4th, 15) and runs scored
(T-4th, 106). His biggest contributions would come in the postseason where he hit .368 (14-for-38) with a home run, 12 runs scored,
sevenRBIandsevensteals.HewasnamedFinalsMVPafterhitting.450(9-for-20)withakeysolohomeruninthedecisivefifthgame.
CHRIS BECK & CHRIS BASSITT
Starters Chris Beck and Chris Bassitt joined the Barons in August from Class A Winston-Salem and provided a huge boost to the
starting rotation after the losses of Johnson, McCully and Stephen McCray toTriple-A Charlotte. In two playoff starts, Bassitt went
2-0 with a 0.71 ERA and Beck went 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA, helping the Barons grab 2-0 series leads against bothTennessee and Mobile.
REGIONS FIELD DOMINANCE
The Barons went 14-2 over this first 16 games at Regions Field including winning nine in a row from 4/22-5/12. The nine-game
streak was the longest for the Barons since winning nine in a row at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in from 7/21-8/4 in 2009. On
the season, the Barons finished with a 44-26 record at home and never lost more than two games in a row during a single series.
The Barons drew 389,552 fans to Regions Field during the regular season and a total of 410,186 fans including the playoffs, the
4th-highest total in franchise history.
