Summary
Real-time information from an oil-and-gas job site is crucial to sustaining optimal business
production, maintaining equipment on the job site, and controlling costs. Hydraulic
fracturing, also known as fracking, is a method of extracting oil and gas from the earth that
has been in use since the late 1940s. Many elements are needed to successfully complete one
job, including precise cooperation and communications among site contractors, water delivery
services, drilling operations, and more.
The experts at Sabre Energy, which specializes in surface and subsurface solutions for the oil
and gas industry, know that having a reliable communications solution is crucial to keeping
a complex and important job site efficient. “If there is an interruption in operations, that’s
potentially $20 million dollars’ worth of equipment, as well as services sitting out there waiting
on a resolution,” explains David Skodack, senior project engineer for Sabre Energy, who has
been working in the oil field and refinery industry for more than 30 years.
“Every minute of downtime would be a lot of money for both our client and our Company.
Effective communication helps us to anticipate problems and address them on a timely basis
to prevent lost productivity,” says Mr. Skodack. To keep Sabre’s systems and employees
performing productively, Sabre relies on KVH’s TracPhone®
V3ip antenna system and
mini‑VSAT Broadband
SM
service for true broadband connectivity on remote job sites.

- 2. Sabre Energy chose to modernize its communications by
selecting a solution that enables it to stay in touch with all
members of its in-field teams, regardless of their location.
KVH Industries’ TracPhone V3ip mobile satellite antenna
system with mini-VSAT Broadband service is a small, yet
powerful satellite antenna ideal for remote field operations,
data vans, and work trucks. The rugged V3ip system is built
to withstand harsh conditions including dirt, dust, high
winds, heavy rain, and snow. KVH’s Vip-series of mobile
satellite antennas were originally designed for the rigorous
demands of commercial maritime environments, and provide
reliable high-speed Internet connectivity and Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP) in the most remote locations and
while on the move.
Sabre Energy uses the TracPhone V3ip antenna on its tractor-
trailers treating water used for hydraulic fracturing. When
the vehicle arrives at its destination, the V3ip antennas are
quickly and easily set up and connected to the Internet via
KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband network.
Results/Impact
The TracPhone V3ip satellite antenna system enables Sabre
Energy to send its vital communications to all of its various
offices regardless of where the job site is located. “KVH has
a good piece of equipment that’s very robust and works
in an oil field environment,” says Mr. Skodack. Although
his people are highly skilled, he explains, they don’t have
backgrounds in satellite communications. The ease of using
the TracPhone V3ip is very important to Sabre. The system
can be set up quickly and it automatically connects to the
network, so the Sabre crews can focus on the necessary tasks
instead of worrying about connectivity.
“It has been useful a number of times when our senior
management team has been in a meeting with a client at the
time the fracs were running,” Mr. Skodack says. “There were
some questions about the different stages and information
regarding our systems. Our senior team was able to answer
those questions virtually in real-time, because they could pull
up the frac logs that were uploaded a few minutes prior.”
Reliable, rugged, and easy-to-use satellite communications
on Sabre’s work trucks is allowing the company to stay
Challenges
According to Mr. Skodack, many companies in the oil and
gas industry still use old technology, and in some cases none
at all.
“We didn’t use anything for satellite connectivity prior
to partnering with KVH,” Mr. Skodack says. “The only
communication we had was our cell phones. Workers could
call out if there was a problem, but if there was no cell service
they would have to physically send someone off site,” he
explains. As many job sites are located in remote areas where
cell service is often not available for many hundreds of miles,
time delays in communication becomes another obstacle to
productivity.
“It is a very inefficient way of communicating if you don’t
have cell service,” he says. “It could be 2-3 hours away, one
way, just to send a file or a document.” Fracking logs from
a job site provide detailed reports and other information to
operators, and are essential tools for many people involved
in the operation. The reports detail vital information to
operators from downhole applications including how much
chemical was used, the volume of water treated, and any
problems experienced on site. In addition to the need to relay
important information, personnel can be put in jeopardy if
they don’t have access to reliable communications.

on a real-time basis. The best part is having our clients tell
us that they can’t always get this type of information out of

that gives Sabre Energy a competitive edge. Further, being
connected on the job site has allowed Sabre’s operators to

the time spent on outside issues. Sabre Energy believes
KVH’s TracPhone V3ip satellite antenna system is a valuable

“Our senior management all believes that as well.”
