2. The Project
Northview Creative was asked for their creative support in
developing the imagery for an exciting new Stout called
Tontine. This included the concept, logo and design of the
bottles, glasses, packaging and even the bottle openers,
coasters, promotional presenters and brochures.
We not only came up with striking imagery but, by
understanding the complexities of differing print processes,
were also able to ensure the designs could be translated on to
a variety of printed media.
Our client was incredibly happy with the results and has since
engaged us with a similar national campaign.

3. The Logo
A 'tontine' is an investment plan for raising capital, devised in the 17th century.
Each subscriber pays an agreed sum into the fund and thereafter receives an
annuity. As members die, their shares devolve to the other participants and so
the value of each annuity increases. Upon the death of the penultimate
member the capital passes to the last survivor.
It led to a number of unexplainable deaths as people’s greed took over. As a
result it was outlawed and is still illegal in most countries today……true
“unconventional darkness”!
The concept of the logo was to incorporate the wings of Samael. Samael was
an archangel who encouraged men to do evil. In this case Tontine greed or
'unconventional darkness'. We wanted it to be decorative but not macabre. A
subtle approach seemed to be the best way to go.

4. The Bottle
Several bottle shapes and styles were used for the test print.
The image you see to the right was the one we and the client felt
worked best. The ink is printed directly on to the bottle.
The darkness of the stout really helped the logo stand out.

5. The Packaging
For the box, which would hold 24 bottles, we opted to stay loyal to the
distressed feel of the logo but take it one step further. The idea was to
create a box that had the appearance of being scraped and
scratched, together with a subtle grey hop print in the background.

7. Glasses
Designs were created to work
with a series of different shaped
glasses.
The wings were extended to wrap
around them.
The client chose the following
after feedback for the range.
