people, community and society. Education, training and welfare of underprivileged; arts/heritage
and culture protection; contribution to associations, clubs and other organizations; contributions to
healthcare and environment etc. are the most commonly reported CSR activities.
The process of globalisation has changed the way economy and nations run. As a result, the roles,
relationships, demands and expectations of various stakeholders have changed. With the private
sector becoming the primary driver of economy, they are beginning to hold great power to influence
social development. At the same time, increased awareness and pressure from consumer groups is
making demands on the corporate sector to commit to socially and ethically responsible business
practices.
With a view to promote children's literature and reading activities in Nepal bringing together the
writers, illustrators, editors of children's books as well as publishers, librarians, teachers, and experts
in children's activities, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Nepal is the continuing commitment
by businesses to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the
workforce and their families as well as the community and society at large.
CSR is about investing, which does not have to be about money, but can be conducted through the
use of human resources, value chains, infrastructure and other business expertise. CSR activities do
have to be well thought out as shareholders and management will want to ensure a positive return
on investment. This means positive impact and outcomes, in which a societal change is made in
whatever thematic areas fit in with core business objectives.
Financial institutions not only influence the profit/loss of its shareholders but also drive the economy
of the whole nation. So it should be concerned about its social obligation and responsibilities. Social
responsibility refers to the obligation of a firm, beyond the required by law of economics, to pursue

welfare of underprivileged; arts/heritage and culture protection; contribution to associations, clubs
and other organizations; contributions to healthcare and environment; etc are the most commonly
reported CSR activities. Child and women developments, religious activity, games and sports
activities, blood donations are also among the thrust area for CSR reporting.
In South Asia, especially in Nepal, there are many examples from the corporate world, where
companies have come forward to work with the society and with the children. Moreover, most of
CSR initiatives in Nepal that target children and society often follow welfare approach. To take this
work forward, we need to allocate resources to build such innovative partnerships. Commitment
should always be to behave ethically and contribute towards the improvement of quality of life of
the people, the community and greatly the society, of which we are an integral part.
