2. The village is dated from the time of Radu cel Frumos (1462-1475).
Archaeological excavations made at Polovragi revealed old dacian
fortress and cemetery. There is springing mineral water, identical with
Pociovalistea, near Novaci.
3. On the bank of Olteţ, in the
middle of nature, we are looking at
the black eye of a cave in which
Zamolxis himself, the goddess so
loved by the Dacians, once lived.
Named the Zamolxis cave,
Pahomie's cave or the Polovragi
cave, the karst formation in the
Oltenian mountains conceals
unpredictable mysteries.
4. According to the legends, Zamolxis was the owner of astonishing
powers, being able to change the appearance of the young man to the
elder as desired. Through the Polovragi cave, the supreme god of the
Geto-Dacians goes deep to get out over the mountains at
Sarmizegetusa.
5. The rumors about the Dacian treasures hidden in Polovragi have
attracted a lot of greedy malicious adventurers. All of them had tragic
deaths in their foolish attempts to disturb the serenity of the place. It is
said that the curse of Zamolxis is still watching the place. Enthusiasts
of paranormal phenomena call the "Triunghiul Bermudelor din
Oltenia" area.
6. Polovragi Monastery
It is a monument of feudal art, located at the entrance
to Oltetului Gorges, at the foot of Piatra Polovragilor
Mountains.
