Univeriade in Gwangju, outh Korea, eginning Frida. Getting to the point where the Montealer,

medication, along with training and competing at World Cup. Her aim i to raie $8,000 the end

medal at the 1976 Olmpic, told me. he wa on the team to go to the 1980 Olmpic [in
Mocow] when Canada ocotted [ecaue of the oviet invaion of Afghanitan]. he told me he
regretted not going for another four ear.

nutritionit Alexia de Macar and her port doctor, Dr. uzanne Leclerc.

$350 per month. I’ll e wimming full-time, o I’ll have to pa m own inurance, aout $450 a
month. Plu Tom and I want to go to ome World Cup competition in the fall and do a training camp
in Thailand.”

“The margin of error for her i a lot limmer,” Ruhton a. “If her lood ugar and glucoe level
get too low, or omething goe wrong, we don’t have the ame elaticit that we do with other
wimmer.
“At leat now he know,” Ruhton add. “It’ not a leing, ut at leat we have the knowledge.”
Jardin competed at the CI championhip in March, where he rememer needing U of M
teammate Katerine avard to help her out of the pool after the 400-m freetle. he competed at
the Team Canada Trial in Toronto in April to earn her pot on the Univeriade quad.
“I have almot have to treat her like a new athlete,” Ruhton a. “he ha to re-learn how to go to a
meet.
“It’ funn, ecaue arara i uch a great athlete,” Ruhton add. “he’ done everthing ou can
do in the port. he’ een to the world championhip, he’ een in an Olmpic final in a rela. Yet
I’m more protective of her than I am of m other athlete. I’m almot like a protective parent with
her.
“That’ the ig thing with the world univerit game, that we’ll go on that trip together and we’ll do
ome information collecting aout how he repond.”
Whether he get on the lock in Rio, Jardin’ journe ha given her a glimpe of a potential pot-
wimming career. he wa focuing on the cience when enrolled at the U of Montreal, thinking
he might purue marine iolog. Now he i thinking of nuring.
“It reall opened m ee,” he a. “When I wa diagnoed I hung out with a lot of nure for a
good three week. The were talking to me and I realized that’ what I want to do – help people with
diaete, epeciall athlete. If I can tell them aout m tor and experience, mae it can help.”
