Discussion on OPPORTUNITY by ndimofor aretas
1. A discussion about
OPPORTUNITY
BY NDIMOFOR ARETAS
Guest speaker on March 3rd 2018 at St. Louis
University Institute Bamenda during the
“UNLEASH THE POWER IN YOU” Seminar
2. What Opportunity is.
How Opportunities manifests.
Why most people miss Opportunities.
Consequences of not seizing Opportunities.
How you can spot and seize Opportunities around you.
Some local Opportunities around you.
What we shall be discussing:
4. Opportunity has several definitions:
A time or set of circumstances that makes it possible
to do something.
A possibility due to a favorable combination of
circumstances.
NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT…
That’s why it is often said that
OPPORTUNITY DOESN'T LAST.
Circumstance is a condition that accompanies or
influences some event or activity.
5. Some say opportunity
is LUCK or CHANCE…
“It is better to be prepared for an
opportunity and not have one than
to have an opportunity and not be
prepared” – Whitney Young
7. Once upon a time, a shoe
manufacturer sent a salesman
to Africa……
A few months later, the salesman made a call
back to the manufacturer saying:
“I WANT TO COME HOME!..... NOBODY
WEARS SHOES IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD!”
8. I believe that if the salesman was on Facebook, he would
have sent images like these back to the manufacturer…
Facebook Status??????
9. A few weeks later, the second salesman also sent
a distress message back to the manufacturer
saying:
So the manufacturer brought him back home
and sent out another salesman.
“I WANT ALL THE SHOES YOU CAN GET!..... EVERYBODY
NEEDS SHOES IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD!”
10. I am sure that if the salesman was on WhatsApp and was a
LADY, she would have sent images like these back to the
manufacturer…
WhatsApp Status??????
11. How did opportunity
manifest in this story?
2) As Work…
1) As a Need…
The Second Salesman had to
understand that the people
NEEDED shoes….
He had to make some effort
to teach people how to wear
shoes…
12. So why did the first salesman miss the opportunity and why do
most people still miss opportunities today?
PROCRASTINATION AND INACTION – Some people hesitate and
miss the moment. They are the GONNA-DOERS
FEAR – Seizing opportunities sometimes means taking risk. And risk
means FACING YOUR FEARS… either financially or emotionally…
PRIDE – Seizing opportunity sometimes means HUMILITY in order
to learn what it takes to effectively handle an opportunity.
13. COMPLACENCE – Seizing opportunity sometimes means not being
satisfied with the status – quo (the way things are).
LAZINESS – “Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes
dressed in overalls and look like work” – Sir Thomas Edison.
LACK OF CLEARLY WRITTEN GOALS! – You can’t find what you are
not looking for… THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON!!!
So why did the first salesman miss the opportunity and why do
most people still miss opportunities today?
14. So what happens when you do not
seize Opportunities?
A few years from now, you will be
more DISAPPOINTED by the
opportunities you didn’t seize, than
by those you did.
15. The seized opportunity renders joy…
The neglected opportunity brings
REGRET.
