Step 2: Analyzing the Organization
Internal Environment
IUEMC is a safety and awareness organization that aims to ensure the well being of
students and staff during emergency situations. They do so by providing the
capabilities to prevent, prepare, respond and recover for any adverse incident on
any IU campus. The department is run by funds from the university and also has
been awarded two Emergency Management for Higher Education Grants. IUPUI was
award the grant in 2008 and a second one was awarded to the other IU campuses in
2010. The website posts blogs throughout the year that give tips on procedures and
preparations for severe weather and other emergency situations.
Public Perception
IUEMC encourages all students to participate in safety and preparedness awareness
as well staff being well educated on protocols during a crisis situation. IU Notify is a
system that sends out phone calls, text alerts and emails to inform students and staff
of an emergency situation and delays due to weather on campus. It has a very active
presence on social media with over 3,200 Twitter followers and over 2,800 likes on
its Facebook page. However, based upon 66 Facebook reviews, the organization has
a 2 out of 5 star rating and harsh criticism regarding campus operations during the
snowstorms and cold during the winter of 2014.
External Environment
The department posts frequently on its social media platforms on questions
regarding IU Notify and latest news and tips on severe weather and other crisis
incidents.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
 High traffic on its social media platforms
 IU Notify is its best resource in spreading news on campus emergencies
 Funding from university and federal grants
Weaknesses
 Many Students are apathetic when it comes to caring about preparedness
 Harsh criticism regarding their choice to maintain campus operations doing
winter storms.
Opportunities
 Hosting events and contests will help put the spotlight on ways to be
prepared for emergency situation.
 Further growth on social media to help spread the word on tips and events as
well as creating a dialogue between the department and its publics
Threats
 Student apathy
 Possibility of not receiving anymore grants
