Natalie Manning, children’s writer and Huon
Valley resident, is off on an exciting adventure.
The West Australian Screen Awards from 2nd
to
4th
August, follows the Revelation Film Festival
held in July in Perth, Western Australia. Natalie
Manning’s children’s story What a Debacle,
Freddy Farkle! in animation form, is being
presented at the festival. Natalie will attend
the screen awards function in her professional
capacity as scriptwriter. What a Debacle, Freddy
Farkle! has been entered in several categories:
best animation-short, best script-short and best
director. The animation has won nominations
for best animation-short and best original-score.
Another feature of the movie is the talented crea-
tive team, including Natalie’s childhood friend,
animator Jesse Emmerson and producer Bridget
Curran. Natalie and the team were talented
enough to attract Sir Barry Humphries’ help in
providing the voiceover.
Fame and Freddie Farkle
Natalie Manning is a young mother and member
of the Huonville Writers Group. Originally from
Western Australia, Natalie has lived in Tasma-
nia for seven years. “I started off with a name,
Freddie Farkle. It comes from a childhood name
my dad used to say,” says Natalie. “I asked
him about it, but we both can’t remember why.
NBN Co has announced the start of construc-
tion of the National Broadband Network
(NBN) in Margate, releasing a detailed map
showing the area covered by the first construc-
tion module.
Construction contractors have now been given
instructions to start work, which begins with
a detailed survey of the area and the existing
telecommunications infrastructure. This work
is expected to take several months before fibre
hauling commences.
The new fibre map, available on the NBN Co
website, shows that construction will begin in
the area between Davies Road, Brightwater
Road, Beach Road and Allens Rivulet Road.
The map is available on NBN Co’s website
at www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco/
maps/margate-tas-rollout-map-7mgt.pdf.
Once construction has begun in an area,
NBN Co will generally release further maps
as they add more construction modules until
all properties in the fibre footprint are covered.
NBN Co community account manager for
Tasmania, Lalla Mackenzie, said: “The release
of these maps each month signals to residents
and businesses that they are on the way to
being able to take advantage of the benefits
the NBN offers.”
On average, it takes around 12 months from
the start of construction until residents and
business owners can order NBN retail services
from telephone or internet service providers.
“Information is already available online about
the plans and packages that telephone and
internet service providers are offering over
the NBN. The details of which service pro-
viders are operating in individual areas will
be available closer to service activation at
www.nbnco.com.au/serviceproviders,” Ms
Mackenzie said.
Mayor of Kingborough Council, Dr Graham
Bury, has welcomed the news regarding the
NBN construction. He said: “It’s exciting to
see work starting on the National Broadband
Network in Margate. I hope that businesses
in particular and families in Margate will take
advantage of the opportunity provided when
NBN arrives in

just some of the successful projects to receive
funding from the Huon Valley Council through
its 2013-14 Community Grants Program.
Huon Valley Mayor Robert Armstrong said
he was pleased to once again be part of the
scheme.
“During the scheme’s 18-year history, many
community activities, projects and events have
been initiated and supported,” he said.
“These initiatives have added vibrancy to our
