In what ways does your media product use
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. Use of an expert Use of interviews Most documentaries use the convention of the expert, the authorities whose claims are relied on a lot in a documentary. An expert is constructed, the audience have some expectation about how experts should look, how they should sound, and what kinds of locations they should be in. Use
3. The interview is a very common and almost essential documentary technique. It allows the person being filmed to speak directly about events. Interviews in a documentary give the audience a sense of realism. To get the detail from an interview, clips of only a few minutes are shown. The interviewer will only ask questions that support the main theme presented within the documentary, and the audience then feel as if the view presented is the only view and it must be correct. 4. Non-Diegetic sound throughout Although documentaries do use non-diegetic sound, it is often stopped or paused at certain points of the narrative. 5. Use of a female expert Only two actors Stereotypically, documentaries rely on experts who are middle-aged, white, well-educated men, we chose to use a female expert, this would work well as our actor is an 18 year old young man, the fact that he is so young would go hand in hand with a female figure. Women are stereotyped as having sympathetic, nurturing and caring personalities. As we already had a male actor a female actor would balance out the gender appeal. Challenge
6. In our documentary we have only used two actors, one is the Schizophrenia sufferer and the other is the expert. By using a small number of characters, the audience could feel sympathetic and understand more about them in the short amount of time and understand how they relate with each other, while they are not becoming too attached to the characters that are not central or too important.
