Good Evening your Worship, Members of Council, Administration and Residents,
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Nadiya Maznychka and I was a 2015/16 Municipal Intern for the Town. So today I would like to share some of the achievements and unforgettable moments of my year here at the Town of Beaumont.
On the Agenda today will be:
Quick recap of what the internship program is all about;
Overview of some of the rotations I have completed with the Town;
Projects I worked on; and
Professional Development Opportunities I had as an intern.
This internship program is funded by the province to attract recent post-secondary graduates into entering a career in local government management.
Some best qualities of it are that:
It is Paid
It provides opportunity to build some great work experience within many municipal departments
It provides support for personal and professional development
And finally it provides great networking opportunities
The photo above is myself and another intern spreading the word about the internship at the Concordia University Career Fair.
Now, let me introduce you into the intern world and we will start with rotations:
First, I have done a rotation with Recreation and Culture where I helped out with preparation and during the Canada Day Celebration, Communities in Bloom and the Community BBQ. As well as I got a chance to work with Summer Camps where under the peer pressure of a 5year old I was forced to hold a tarantula. So yeah you see that hand there – that’s mine! Obviously first rotation helped overcome my deep personal fear of spiders.
Second, I rotated with Parks where I went out with the crew and did everything from flower beds with our one and only flower lady Donna Zak; did parks inspections; weeding, weed whacking; morning runs, mulching and sodding a new temporary park that came in place of the old Shell Station. And you can see some of the evidence of that captured in these photos
Third, within Public Works I learned the process of a construction completion and final acceptance certificate inspection; got a tour of water pump houses; went out to do lot grading inspections and most importantly participated in the Waste Audit that definitely changed my life. Since, I have been paying much much more attention to recycling.
Also, a big part of the internship was learning governance and management processes that are in place within the municipal world. I attended leadership team meetings as well as Council and GPC meetings where I learned that elected officials and administration work very hard hand in hand to push forward initiatives that are important to Beaumont’s residents. I also volunteered to be a secretary at the Safety Committee which was a learning experience of coordinating meetings, prepping agendas and taking minutes.
Next, I would like to mention a few projects that I got involved with. For example, helping out with the Budget 2015/16 for which I’ve done multiple research projects including: socio-economic report, did comparative research on council honorariums, utility rates and mill rates and learned about 3 year budget forecast process;
Some other projects include research and support to the project lead of the Digital Entrance Sign; researching Community Standards Bylaws; researching existing signing authority and procurement processes across Alberta and drafting of the employee uniforms and promotional clothing policy.
And last but not least I want to talk about professional development opportunities that this internship provides. That includes everything from ability to attend fantastic Conferences like AUMA Alberta Urban Municipalities Association; ARMAA Alberta Rural Municipal Administrator's Association; AAMDC Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties; and finally ICMA International City/County Management Association which was held in Seattle last year and I could not come back without this photo you see, as I’m not sure if you are familiar with the FISH Philosophy, but that was the first thing Municipal Affairs showed us during one of our sessions with them. Fish philosophy is build on the idea that you can always have fun at work, and the more positive you are the more productive you will be and the more successful your organization will be; So PIKE PLACE located at the Seattle Fish Market has achieved this philosophy by throwing fish to each other and singing customers’ orders out loud and that way entertaining the crowd and having fun.
Also the internship provided opportunity to take courses, like Project Management training from NAIT; local government training from Municipal Affairs and the ability to do intern visits in different municipalities and learn about their experiences such as my visit to County and City of Wetaskiwin visit
In Conclusion, I want to Thank All of you for such a great experience I had here at the Town of Beaumont. I find that in this world it is hard to find a place were everyone can feel safe and inclusive and I think you guys have done it! I know that I am walking away with great knowledge gained through your support and some unforgettable fun moments like carving my first ever pumpkin during Halloween or digging through garbage during Waste Audit – definitely something I won’t forget.
I wish you personally and the town all the best !!! And with this I will conclude my presentation.
Any questions, before I get too emotional and start to tear up.
