There are two types of secondary bone: compact and spongy bone. Compact bone is dense bone tissue that forms the outer layer of bones and the shafts of long bones. Spongy or cancellous bone is a porous bone tissue found at the ends of long bones and interior of vertebrae and other flat bones. The document also discusses the epiphyseal plate, which is the layer of growing cartilage located at the ends of long bones.
