Cliff diving is an extreme sport where divers jump from heights of 18-28 meters into water. It originated in Hawaii in 1770 when the king demanded his men leap from cliffs into the water without splashing to prove courage. Today it takes extensive training, courage, self-confidence, physical control and quick decision making abilities. Divers can reach speeds of 75-100 km/h during the 3 second free fall, and must accurately judge the height of their jump. While some take up the sport recreationally, others compete professionally for the challenge and thrill of overcoming such a difficult feat.
