THE PROBLEM
In large institutions there is no good way to target
opportunities for collaboration around innovation.
Professionals working in a variety of contexts -
from regulatory agencies to social innovation labs
- have a hard time identifying who among their
colleagues and counterparts has the experience
and expertise to improve decision-making and
problem-solving.

Innovation is critical to enabling NHS
England to achieve its ambitions to ramp
up the pace and scale of change,
and deliver better outcomes
for patients and for the NHS.
With the Five Year Forward Plan NHS
England has clearly articulated the
fundamental role of data and innovation

Imagine an Expert Network for NHS England around Public Data Science where
expertise can be made manifest and searchable. To include:
Those with with experience in data science in the areas of open data or big data
Those working within or outside of NHS England to expand open data programs
Those using data to track health care outcomes
Those knowledgeable about applying data science practices and tools to
improve health outcomes

As part of an ongoing project to understand the demand
and capacity to use data by NHS in England, NHS is
collaborating with the GovLab to test the Network of
Innovators expert finder at the 2015 NHS Health and
Care Innovation Expo. By using the tool at the Expo and
sharing your feedback, you will share invaluable learning
about ways to use new technology to leverage expertise
to improve healthcare.

  • 3. 3 THE PROBLEM In large institutions there is no good way to target opportunities for collaboration around innovation. Professionals working in a variety of contexts - from regulatory agencies to social innovation labs - have a hard time identifying who among their colleagues and counterparts has the experience and expertise to improve decision-making and problem-solving. OUR GOVERNING INNOVATION CHALLENGE FINDING EXPERTISE WITHIN AND ACROSS LARGE INSTITUTIONS Titles and credentials don’t capture real world know-how Government projects are branded as institutional achievements Lack of well developed taxonomies for new domains (e.g. data science or citizen science)
  • 4. 4 CASE Innovation is critical to enabling NHS England to achieve its ambitions to ramp up the pace and scale of change, and deliver better outcomes for patients and for the NHS. With the Five Year Forward Plan NHS England has clearly articulated the fundamental role of data and innovation in achieving these ambitions at all levels of the organization. To include: Those with with experience in data science in the areas of open data or big data Those working within or outside of NHS England to expand open data programs Those using data to track health care outcomes Those knowledgeable about applying data science practices and tools to improve health outcomes CASE NHS + PUBLIC DATA SCIENCE EXPERTISE
