4. SOLAR
Pine Street showing solar panels installed flat (parallel and tight to the
roofing). Performance is diminished due to the lower sun incidence angle
and the increase in time that the panels are covered following snowfall, plus
re-roofing is complicated. Also the panels were moved up on the roof
(westward) to be less visible from the street, and so they are shaded earlier
by the high bank on this site, further diminishing performance.
5. SOLAR
Williams Street façade
Showing historic detail. Solar
panels are mounted on the rear
of the building, where they are
nearly invisible from the street.
6. SOLAR
Williams Street,
Bellows Falls.
Solar installation is on the
rear of the building and can
not be seen from the street
without some effort. The
panels are mounted at the
recommended 45-degree
angle, reducing or
eliminating snow issues, and
increasing performance.
The de facto principle of HP
review is that the view from
the front counts, the view
from the rear does not.

8. SOLAR; WINDOWS; BUILDING ENVELOPE
The Windham Housing Trust
created 29 apartments in the Daly
Shoe Building, a former
warehouse. The energy efficient
retrofit uses solar panels for
domestic hot water.
9. WINDOWS; BUILDING ENVELOPE
Willard Mill, St. Albans. A former factory, the development was
remodeled with foam insulation on the interior and aluminum clad windows.
Energy performance was increased so that affordability will be maintained at
oil prices up to $6 a gallon.
10. CVCLT property, Barre St., Montpelier. Energy use was cut in half after
windows were replaced, siding was removed and exterior rigid foam
insulation added, and solar panels for domestic hot water were mounted
on the back roof. Building will be able to maintain affordability at oil prices
in the $5/gallon range.
