Terror alert over
World Cup gangs
by AIDAN RADNEDGE
We’ve Bonded: Comedian Steve Coogan and 007 star Dame Judi Dench arrive for the gala screening of Philomena at the BFI London
Film Festival last night. Coogan, who plays a journalist helping reunite a mother and son, said the role did not clash with his
campaign for press controls. The 48-year-old added: ‘I only have strong views about bad press people. I like good journalists’ PICTURE: ZEMPICS
FOOTBALL fans have been warned to expect a ‘World
Cup of terror’ at the hands of Brazilian crime gangs.
Supporters heading to South America next summer
are said to be under threat from the notorious First
Capital Of The Command crime syndicate.
They will be targeted if police go ahead with moving some of the gang members to tougher prisons.
The group made its threat in messages intercepted
by police in the country’s largest city, Sao Paulo.
Military police chief Col Benedito Roberto Meira
said his officers had been told ‘to show increased
vigilance’ ahead of the tournament.
The city’s security secretariat yesterday added: ‘It
is a group that should be taken seriously and be
fought like any criminal organisation.’
Up to 600,000 foreign football supporters are
expected in Brazil for the World Cup finals.
The 1,300-strong First Capital Of The Command,
formed in 1993 by hardcore inmates of the city’s
Taubate jail, has been behind a series of riots.
A total of 175 people – including dozens of police
– were killed when the syndicate unleashed a wave
of attacks in the city in 2005, while another 196
officers died in clashes last year.
Mark Perryman, from supporters’ group englandfans, shrugged off the fears, saying: ‘We had a wonderful time in South Africa and Ukraine, and I’m
sure we’ll have a wonderful time in Brazil. They’ve
got some social problems, get over it.’
However, England fans may well be robbed blind
by travel agencies, which are said to be ramping up
prices for flights and hotels during the tournament.
Even modest Brazilian hotels are charging as much
as £800 a night for the duration of the tournament.
The Brazilian Hotel Industry Association has
warned: ‘During the cup, the cost of everything will
go up. That’s the market.’
