Business ethics has been defined as a
system of moral principles applied in the
commercial world.
Business ethics is a form of applied ethics
that examines ethical principles and moral
principles that arise in the business
environment
 Legality is what has been stated in the law
or the statutes. A common dilemma when
what is legal is not necessarily ethical. Eg
in the Bopal gas tragedy.
 Morality refers to the principles of right or
wrong. It consists of what a person ought
to do to comform to society’s norms of
behaviour e.g honesty, justice, gratitude
 Ethics on the other hand is the reasonings
for or against the morality stipulated.
 Morals are viewed as the foundation on
which ethics rest.
 In business, ethics are about bearing in
mind the full weight of any corporate
decision .
 is the behavior that a business adheres to in
its daily dealings with the world. The ethics
of a particular business can be diverse. They
apply not only to how the business
interacts with the world at large, but also
to their one-on-one dealings with a single
customer.
 1. personal level/ individual level
 2. Organisational level ie the company
 3. National level- collective expectations of
society
 4. International level-cordinated efforts
across national boundaries
 Publishing in house codes of ethics(conduct)
 Employ people with a reputation of high
standards of ethical behaviour at top levels
 Incorporate considerations of ethics in
performance reviews
 Reward ethical behaviour
 Ethics and values should form the basis of
the code of conduct for a company. The
code of conduct governs the behaviour of
business managers, employees, directors
etc.
The code of conduct contains ethical values
such as;
1. Impartiality/ fairness
2. Responsiveness to public interest
3. Accountability
4. Honesty
5. Transparency
6. Integrity
7. ..........................etc
 Ethical behaviour is a necessity to gain trust
ie with company suppliers, employees,
customers etc
 Improves profitability ie high returns
 Fosters good business relations and
employee productivity
 Reduces/eliminates penalties from public
authorities and regulators
 Protects businesses against unscrupulous
employees and competitors
 Protects employees from harmful actions of
the employer.
 Protect its reputation
 Ensures the business sustainability eg Sakthi
Masala pvt.
 Infosys has been regarded as India’s most
popular and best managed IT company.
