3. Mr. Churchill’s Political Positions
• In 1900, he was elected Conservative MP for
Oldham.
• In 1904, he joined the Liberal Party.
• In the 1906 General Election, he won North
West Manchester, instantly becoming a
member of the New Liberal Government. (He
was the Under-Secretary of State for the
Colonies.)
• In the 1910 General Election, he became
Home Secretary.

• He rejoined the Conservative Party in 1924
due to a division in the Liberal Party.
• In May of 1940 he became Prime Minister and
Minister of Defense.
• He remained in office until 1945.
• Served as Prime Minister again from 1951 to
1955.
• Remained a member of Parliament until the
General Election of 1964.
5. Winston’s Accomplishments
• He was the Chancellor of the Exchequer in
1924-1929.
• Winston was knighted and awarded the
Nobel Prize for literature in 1953 for his six
volume history of WW II.
• Churchill led Britain through the war in WW
II.
• He became a national hero after his escape
from captivity during the Boer War.

developed a plan for victory over

• He returned Britain to the gold
standard while Chancellor of

• During a speech in 1946, he warned of

7. Churchill’s Military Endeavors
• He set up the Royal Naval Air service in 1912,
because he was one of the first people to
grasp the military potential of aircraft.
• He joined the WW I council in 1914.
• For the final year of the war, he was in
charge of the production of tanks, airplanes,
guns and shells as the Minister of Munitions.
• He served as Minister of War and Air from
1919-1920 under David Lloyd George.

of the Military Coordinating Committee.
• He served as First Lord of Admiralty
when WW II broke out.
• He refused to make peace with
Germany while Hitler was in power.

• Churchill liked to use chemical weapons
such as poison gas against recalcitrant Arab
tribes in his free time.
• Winston enjoyed painting when he could,
even though he had little knowledge of the
arts, and was not terribly good at it.
• Churchill was also a big smoker; he
frequently used cigars.
• He liked playing with horses.

• Churchill was a prolific author and journalist. His first
book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force 1897,
about his experiences on the Northwest Frontier of
India, was published in 1898, one of forty titles
published in over sixty volumes during his lifetime.
• Churchill took up cigar smoking in 1895 while
accompanying Spanish forces in Cuba, where he had
gone both as a military observer and journalist. It was
in Cuba that he also acquired the habit of taking a
daily siesta.

• His father was Lord Randolph Churchill. He
was a Conservative politician.
• His mother was an American named Jennie
Jerome. She was the daughter of Leonard
Jerome, a New York Businessman.
• His parents neglected him as a child. He was
turned over to a wet nurse by his mother.

• Winston was the elder of his brother, John,
by six years.
• Sir Winston Churchill died at the age of 90
with his wife, Clementine Churchill, and other
family members at his bedside.

• Churchill served under six monarchs - Queen Victoria,
King Edward VII, King George V, King Edward VIII,
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II!! Super-Duper
Cereal!
• Churchill would regularly wake at about 8.30am, have
a cigar in bed and then hold court sitting propped up
in bed!! He would read all the major daily newspapers,
study the papers in his Prime Ministerial box, give
dictation to his secretaries and hold discussions with
senior military advisors such as Sir Hastings Ismay
and General Alan Brooke!! A breakfast table was
specially made to fit over Churchill's bed!! What a lazy
daisy!!

• Winston Churchill held over nine different
political offices, including Prime Minister.
• He was crucial factor for the Allies victory
in WW II, with innovations such as the
Royal Naval Air Service.
• Winston did not have much of a social life-
he focused mainly on his work. This
actually was a good thing, because it meant
he was a better politician and military
leader.
