Pref. The townspeople of the region have been forced to live in
evacuation shelters in and out of the Prefecture due to the Great East
Japan Earthquake, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and subse-

conducted constant record surveys in the evacuation area with the
cooperation and support of NPO “Shinmachi- Namie” run by locals
and participated in an annual festival “Fukkou no Tsudoi”, which
wish for a completion of restoration of Namie.

naized about 3 years ago with 4 laboratories; Nagamine
laboratory at Kwansei Gakuin University, Sogabe laboratory
at Kanagawa university, Terauchi Laboratory at Shinsyu
University and Tsukihashi Laboratory at Kobe University.

■ Monthly meeting, “Design the future of Oshima”
Monthly community discussions about how the island will
restore and develop itself from Tohoku Earthquake and Tsuna-
mi. So far, we held these 21 times with islanders in Oshima.
The key subjects of these meetings are the reconstruction of
island’s fishing and tourism industries, the issue about
construction of the coastal levee, a bridge be scheduled for
construction by 2019, joined the island to the mainland, and so
on. On Nov. 4, 2013, we made a statement about the Declara-
tion of “Restoration od Oshima” which offered a guide for the
policies in Oshima.
■ An investigation of public perception of the coastal levee
With a support of islander’s association, we erected a full size
mock-up made of bamboo at Uranohama fishery harbor since
Apr. 2013 and interviewed opinions residents had about it. The
result of the search was used as a consideration about this issue
in “Design the future of Oshima”.
■ “Eco & Arts Project 2013 and 2014”
The purpose of this project is rediscovering the resources or
the appeals Oshima has through various programs on the
subject of ecology or arts. Through this project, we holed
“Design School of Oshima” where the students at Oshima
junior high school studied their island about its nature, folk
stories and all that and planned the future of it.
■ ISLAND STUDY
An overall investigations into the island from perspective of
vegetation, geography, industry, culture, damage situation and
so on. It was conducted in 2012. These studies are summarised
as 9 papers.
■ Publishment of the newspapers “Oshima Mirai Shinbun”
We published a series of newspaper called, “Oshima Mirai
Shinbun”, as a tool of sharing the affairs related to island resto-
ration or progress status of our project. We published 21 times
over 3 years.

■ My Graduation Thesis (Got score A)
: A Study on the factors of decline of shopping streets in local
areas and the means of restoring these streets
I got interested in the decline of shopping street in local
areas in Japan. In fact, the percentage of rising shopping
streets has been very low, 1.6% in 2006 and 1% in 2009. I
conducted field investigations, questionnaire of citizens
and interview research at 3 shopping streets; “Marugame-
mashi shopping street”, ”Sunamashiginza shopping
street” and ”Karasumaekimaedoori shopping street”
throughout 2011. And I studied the new meaning of the
districts as well as the underlying causes of this change,
through analysing the findings.

This study is based on a analysis of the 2,412 memories
which were spoken by 810 local residents through a
workshop held at Otsuchi-cho, Iwate Prif. from May. 13
to May. 19 in 2013 with the 1/500 restoration model
which reproducing the town space before the Tohoku
Earthquake and Tsunami.
- Categorised the memories and analysed how the participants
recall their memories through waiting the models.
- Found the local commons by studying a map which was
plotted of the memories.
- In particular, focused on the many springs which made
the character of this town and studied the uses of them.
- Described the life scape at Osyachi park by integrating
the memories.
This study is based on a analysis of the 1,121 memories
which were spoken by 1,064 local residents through a
workshop held at Kessennuma-shi, Miyagi Prif. from
Sep. 22 to Sep.28 in 2012 with the 1/500 restoration
model which reproducing the town space before the
Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
- Discovered and Analysed the cultural and natural resources
the town had before.
- Proposed a method to describe the former aspects of
their daily lives with a storyline through integrating the
memories.
- Studied the usability of this method as a way to record
and hand down their resources.
Developed a method of extracting and describing the life histories and cultures with the memories which were collected
through the workshops in devastated areas. Studied the possibility of people’s memories to hand down the natural and cultur-
al resources each region had before and the meaning of the memory of place for devastated residents. In particular, we
focused on 3 areas; Kesennuma City, Otuchi Town and Namie Town, when we advanced the research.
- Performed the hearing surveys (workshops) in 10 areas affected by The Tohoku Earthquake and interviewed over 300 local people.
