• Planning is the function of
management that involves setting
objectives and determining a course
of action for achieving those
objectives.
• Planning requires that managers be
aware of environmental conditions
facing their organization and forecast
future conditions

The fundamental purposes of planning is to help organization reach its
objectives.
• Organizational planning has 2 purposes.
• Protective purpose.
• Affirmative purpose.

5. Protective & Affirmative purpose
• Protective purpose: is to minimize risk by reducing the
uncertainties surrounding business conditions and clarifying
consequences of related management actions.
• Affirmative purpose: is to increase the degree of
organizational success.
• Another purpose of planning: is to establish a coordinated
effort within the organization.

6. Types of planning.
• Operational Planning. Operational plans are about how things
need to happen.
• Strategic Planning: Strategic plans are all about why things
need to happen.
• Tactical Planning: specify the detail of how overall objectives
are to be met
• Short term: plan for less than a year
• Long term: plan for beyond five year

7. Planning increase performance.
• Planning helps companies identify markets that are
large and growing, which makes it easier for the
company to build revenues.
• Planning also helps companies gain a clear picture of
the competitors they will be going up against
• They are better able to develop strategies that take
advantage of competitors' weaknesses
