BOSTON—Pinch-hitter Dan Johnson hom-
ered off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth in-
ning to tie it, and Dioner Navarro doubled in
the go-ahead run Tuesday night as the Rays
rallied past the Red Sox 5-4 to snap a four-game
skid and extend their lead in the AL East.
Johnson woke up in Pennsylvania as a
member of Triple-A Durham, which was pre-
paring to play Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the
International League playoffs, before getting
his callup. Johnson flew into Boston and ar-
rived just before the first pitch.
“It’s been real hectic, so there’s not really
much time to reflect,” Johnson said.
The Rays had lost six of seven games — and
the Red Sox had won six of seven, including a
3-0 victory in the series opener — to cut the
cushion from 51
⁄2 games to just a half-game.
With a victory Tuesday, the Red Sox could have
moved into first place for the first time since
June 28; instead, the Rays are 11
⁄2 up.
Tampa Bay led 3-2 with two outs in the
eighth when Dan Wheeler (4-5) walked Kevin
Youkilis and then Jason Bay barely cleared
the Green Monster to give Boston the lead.

Lance Berkman hit
a three-run homer
in the first inning
and added an RBI
double in the third
as the surging Astros defeated
the Pirates 9-3. Houston has
won 12 of 13 to pull within four
games of the NL wild-card spot.
Carlos Delgado
had his second
consecutive two-
homer game as the
Mets held off the
Nationals 10-8. He hit a two-
run shot in the third off John
Lannan and a solo shot in the
sixth off Charlie Manning.
Justin Morneau hit
a two-run homer as
the Twins beat the
Royals 7-2 to pull
within one game of
the White Sox in the AL Cen-
tral. Morneau pulled a shot just
over the baggie in right to give
the Twins some cushion.
With the Phillies in
the midst of the
tight NL East race,
Kyle Kendrick laid
an egg, allowing
seven runs in 11
⁄3 innings in a
10-8 loss to the Marlins. Jorge
Cantu’s three-run homer fin-
ished Kendrick’s night.
Rockies reliever
Taylor Buchholz
balked in the win-
ning run, allowing
Kelly Johnson to
score, giving the Braves a 5-4,
10-inning victory. Buchholz had
already moved his feet to begin
his windup when he paused.
Mike Cameron
went 0-for-5 with
three strikeouts and
left six runners on
base as the Brewers
lost 5-4 to the Reds in 11 in-
nings. In his final at-bat in the
10th with two men on base and
two outs, Cameron flied out.
