I found the set cover problem intriguing the very first time I studied it during my PhD, but I didn't know that it would become such a central part of my professional career. The set cover problem is one of the fundamental problems in theoretical computer science and appears in many real world applications. I was engulfed by this kind of hard problems during my thesis work. I studied variations that took time into consideration. It became natural to consider so called online problems, where data points are assumed to appear and become known to the algorithm one by one during execution.
