My interviewwaswithJuddMesserwhoisa special assistanttoDrew Bishopdirectorof
baseball operations,andAugie Garridothe headbaseballcoachat the Universityof TexasatAustin.
Juddhas beenwiththe Universityof Texasforfouryearsand runs baseball campsinthe summerthat
helpsfundcoaches’salariesaswell asotherbaseball equipment.He alsodoesscoutingreportsaswell
as stats and videocompilationonopposingteamsinthe conference.Furthermore he managesinterns
and makessure that theyare helpingthe operationrunsmoothly.Anotherkeyrole he playsishelping
coordinate communicationamongstplayersandcoaches,sothismeansthatif there isa memothat
needstobe sentout regardingpractice timesorif the playershave an opiniontheywouldlike tovoice
theygo throughJuddfirst.He got on as a paidinternfouryearsago as a studentmanagerwhichwas
essentiallyhisfootinthe door.He waswiththemfor one yearwhere he builtrapportand whenthe
headmanagerlefta vacancy,Coach Garrido offeredJuddthe job,whichhe gladlyaccepted.Since then
he has had 2 runsto Omaha,but alsohistoricallysome of the worstbaseball seasonsinUniversityof
Texasbaseball history.
WhenI askedJuddwhatit tookto be a leaderhe saidyoumust be able to communicate with
everyone whethertheyare belowyouorabove you.Additionallyhe mentionedthatwe are all human
and will make mistakesfromtime totime,whichhe saidisproductive if we learnfromthem.
Furthermore, he emphasizedthe needtosocializeandbe a sponge byabsorbingasmuch informationas
possible seeingashowyoucan learnfromany andeveryone youcome in contact with. WhenI asked
Juddwhetherornot leadershipandmanagementweredistinctconceptshe said thathe thoughtthey
were synonymousinthatinorderto be in managementyoumusthave verystrongleadershipskills.
Regardingwhatskillsare necessarytobe inhisposition,he statedloyaltyatthe topof hislist.
He reasonedthatbeingata baseball powerhouse like UTwitha headcoach like Augie Garridowho

on youat all times.We discussedhowwhenGarridohadhisrun-insrecentlyhe hadtoreallyshowhis
loyaltybecause of all of the badpublicity.Thismeantthathe mustdefendGarridoandstay true to who
got himwhere he istoday.Nextwastime managementandorganization.He said“if we (Mr.
Bishop,Garrido,andHe) were notsoorganized nothingwouldgetdone inatimelymannerandthings
wouldnotbe as smooth”.Anotherthinghe saidwasthat goingintothe sportmanagementfieldyou
shouldunderstandthatyouwill be overworkedandunderpaid,butif youhave a passionforitand enjoy
whatyou do itwill be bothrewardingandfulfilling,evenif itisjusta steppingstone.
His advice tome was to getinvolvedwithaninternship.He statedthatmostpeople donot
actuallylike the fieldonce theygetinbecause of the longhoursand the pay,or lack thereof,soitis
reallyanecessitytogetin andtestthe watersbeforehand.Althoughthiskindof goeshandinhandhe
emphasizedthe needtogetyourname out there andstart makingthose connections.He statedthat
walkingintoopendoors canbe a little intimidatingbutthatbytakingopportunitiesandseizingthem
youwill learna lotas well asbuildstrongrelationshipsthathe comparedtoa fraternity.
