Michael Chock Discusses the Minnesota Humane Society
1. Michael Chock Discusses the Minnesota Humane Society
Founded in 1869, the Minnesota Humane Society has performed as an animal welfare organization for
nearly 150 years. The organization holds responsibility for creating one of the country's first animal
cruelty laws, and it continues to defend both domesticated animals and wildlife. As an advocate, it has
promoted an end to using unclaimed dogs and cats for experimental purposes, hunting mourning doves,
and hunting bears with hounds. Stopping puppy and kitten mills represents another important cause for
the organization.
In addition to legislative initiatives, the Minnesota Humane Society runs other campaigns. It rescues
animals from local shelters, spays/neuters and vaccinates them, and places them with foster families.
Since the 1980s, the Minnesota State Fair has featured a booth from the organization that teaches
attendees about various animal issues. While general education plays an important role in its mission,
the group also concentrates on children with Youth Education programs and the KIND NEWS newsletter.
