“M” received a “memorandum” (information about a subject “TOP SECRET”) about a
Russian agent Le Chiffre, treasurer of a Communist-Controlled Union in France called
SODA. He was near financial ruin because he “borrowed” fifty million francs of SODA´s
funds and lost them to make bad investments. He had to return the money because if he
didn´t they would kill him. He hoped to repair the money winning it playing baccarat in the
Royale-Lex-Eaux Casino which organized a very important baccarat game.
MI6 sent James Bond to the mission. He was a good gambler “the best” of the
organization. Bond went to France with Mathis another agent who was a Bond´s good
friend and also, a woman Vesper Lynd as a Mathis´s assistant. The CIA sent an agent too,
Felix Leiter to help 007.
During his stay in France Bond wanted to be killed by SMERSH agents but they couldn´t.
The game became a fight between James Bond and Le Chiffre. However 007 he lost
almost all his money in the first round. That´s when Felix Leiter helped Bond giving him
thirty million francs.
Bond won the game and the money and also felt in love with Vesper. But Le Chiffre didn´t
want that ending. He kidnapped James and his girlfriend and tortured them in his village.
A man hit him with a gun across his legs. After that a SODA´s agent came into the village
and killed Le Chiffre but didn´t kill Bond or Vesper. So they escaped from there and
became lovers.
One day they saw a man called Gettler who said he was watching them. James didn´t pay
attention to that. The next morning he discovered Vesper committed suicide and a letter
that she wrote to him. In the letter said she was a double agent and SMERSH kidnapped
her boyfriend. After that she decided to make a new life with Bond but she realized that
will never happen.
Hughie Erskine was a good-looking and kind man who had an income of 200 pounds a
week which came from his aunt. He was in love with a beautiful girl Laura Marson who
also was his fiancée. They planned to marriage but Laura´s father a strict military didn´t
want to hear about their marriage unless Hughie could got ten thousand pounds.
Hughie had a friend called Trevor who was a painter and did well his art. One day Hughie
visited Trevor and found a beggar modelling for him. Moved, he gave the beggar the only
pound he had in his pocket and went home.
The next day Hughie said Trevor what he did. The painter surprised said him that the
model wasn´t a beggar, by contrast, he was the Baron Hausberg one of the richest men in
London. Hughie ashamed and didn´t want to imagine the laughs of that man when he
gave him the pound.
However, days later he received a cheque of the Baron for 10 000 pounds. After the first
meeting, Hausberg asked Trevor all about Hughie´s life and he knew about the marriage
so he lent him that money.
