CHAIN REACTION
3. What is mean by Chain reaction?
โข A chain reaction refers to a process in which neutrons released in
fission produce an additional fission in at least one further nucleus.
This nucleus in turn produces neutrons, and the process repeats.
โข A nuclear chain reaction occurs when one reaction causes additional
reactions. For example, a neutron can cause a uranium atom to
undergo fission, which releases energy and several more neutrons,
which then split more uranium atoms and release more energy and
neutrons

5. Types of Chain reaction
โข The two main types of chain reactions are radical reactions and
nuclear fission. Both types of chain reactions involve the same
general reaction components.
6. What is mean by the radical reaction ?
โข A radical substitution reaction is a reaction which occurs by a free
radical mechanism and results in the substitution of one or more of
the atoms or groups present in the substrate by different atoms or
groups. The initiation step in a radical chain reaction is the step in
which a free radical is first produced.
โข An example of an industrially useful radical reaction is the
chlorination of methane to yield chloromethane. This reaction is the
first step in the preparation of the solvents dichloromethane and
chloroform.
7. What is mean by nuclear fission?
โข A chain reaction refers to a process in which neutrons released in
fission produce an additional fission in at least one further nucleus.
This nucleus in turn produces neutrons, and the process repeats. The
process may be controlled (nuclear power) or uncontrolled (nuclear
weapons).
โข The process in nuclear physics in which the nucleus of an atom splits
into two daughter nuclei. When Uranium-235 atom is bombarded
with a neutron, it splits into two lighter nuclei Barium and Krypton.
