JARADA ISLAND
appears like a wide,
white smile in the flat,
aqua sea. It matches my
own contented grin as
I lie stretched out on a
plushly upholstered sun
bed and take another
sip of the chilled mineral
water brought to me
by a crew member.
Required to do nothing
more taxing than work
on my tan, I watch as
the anchor is dropped
and we moor at a fair
distance from shore – the
69-foot vessel on which
I sit can’t ramp up onto
the beach like the small
speedboat that is the
only other sign of life in
the vicinity.
I had heard spots like
Jarada exist in this nation
made up of 33 islands,
but without a boat to call
my own, I have never
been able to confirm this
first-hand. It’s a good
thing, then, that ART
Marine dropped anchor
in Bahrain in January

Our Azimut 68S suits
us just fine, however,

We discover another
trick up its sleeve when
our captain emerges
from the cockpit to ask if
we’re ready to go ashore.
Though very comfortable
right where we are, the
small spit of sand is
inviting, so we say yes,
upon which he presses
a button and a hatch
at the back of the boat
lifts up to reveal a white
motorised rubber dinghy.
This is lowered into
the water and we step
aboard to be whisked to
shore, alighting on soft,
seemingly untouched
sand at a comfortable
distance from the
beach’s only other
occupants.
An hour bobbing in
the cool, clear water
follows, largely spent
marvelling at the fact
that we’re just an hour
away from buzzy Bahrain
rather than on an exotic
island located in some
tropical paradise like
the Maldives. Then we
return to the boat to find
air-conditioned respite
from the midday heat
in the lounge, where a
platter of sandwiches
and a tropical fruit salad
await, along with a
couple of beverages on
ice. Afterwards there’s
just time to dive off the
back of the boat for one
last swim before settling
on deck for the return
trip, wind in our hair and
even wider smiles on our
faces than the ones we
arrived with.

My ideal way to start the day… is
meeting up with friends before work
for coffee and the best croissants
around at Le Chocolat Café (opposite

If I need a breath of fresh air… I
head out by boat with my husband
and children to one of the sand banks
surrounding Bahrain. Pristine, crystal
blue waters and a deserted island all
to ourselves… it feels like I’ve been a
million miles away when I get back
(charter a luxury yacht, see p89,
or organise a boat trip through the
Coral Beach Club, from BD25 for half
an hour, +973 17 312 700).
To unwind… I enjoy going to La
FontaineCentreofContemporaryArt
in Manama (see p103), particularly
when there’s a concert in the open-
air Moon Courtyard.
If I have out-of-town guests…
I always take them to see the
traditional Bahraini architecture
in Muharraq and to Qalaat Al-
Bahrain (see p103). The museum
is wonderfully informative and the
views from the fort’s ramparts over
the sea and the Seef district are
unbeatable, especially at sunset.

Bowling is big news in
Bahrain, and one of the
most popular places to
play is at Funland. They
take the game seriously
here, with regular
tournaments. There
are 18 lanes, so you can
keep your distance from

WATERPARK
Bahrain’s largest
waterpark is the Lost
Paradise of Dilmun, at
Al-Areen in the south of
the island, but Wahooo!,
recently opened at City
Centre Mall, is the Gulf’s
first indoor/outdoor
waterpark. Younger
customers can enjoy
the timid wave pool and
lazy river, while for older
children there is the
Master Blaster, a roller
coaster that propels
you up and down for a
230m stretch and then
deposits you into a
pool. Every Wednesday
after 5.30pm it’s Ladies’
Night at Wahooo!, which
means women get the
privacy to swim and
dance (a DJ is on hand
all night) without any

“COULD YOU ORGANISE a camel
safari across the desert for us?”
my sister asked prior to her visit
to Bahrain. I had to laugh because,
for all the Kingdom’s attractions,
expanses of undulating desert
traversed by Bedouin caravans are
not among them. We have 4WDs
and tarmac highways these days, I
wrote back. Fortunately all was not
lost, thanks to the Janabiya Camel
Farm. This little-known venture was
established by Shaikh Mohammed to
preserve Bahrain’s camel presence
and provide public access to these
hardy creatures. There’s no charge
to visit; you simply enter the palatial
gates marked “Private Property” and
wander freely among the Arabian-
style pavilions housing 400 camels
in a delightfully relaxed, un-touristy
ambience. The males are tethered as
they can be aggressive, but we were
invited into the female pens, where
mama camels fluttered their enviably
long eyelashes as we stroked their
gangly newborns. At the end of the
visit we were invited to enjoy a glass
of freshly expressed camel milk,
which was surprisingly mild and
as frothy as cappuccino foam. It is
also apparently packed with health
benefits, from anti-bacterial to anti-
ageing properties – I’m hopeful that
long eyelashes are among them.
The Camel Farm is on the Janabiya
Highway and is open from sun-up to
sundown daily
