Dec. 9, 1934
In the famous “sneaker” game, the Bears squander a 10-3 lead at the
half and fall to the Giants 30-13 at the Polo Grounds in the NFL title
game. The Giants change to sneakers at halftime and run the previously
undefeated Bears into the ground, outscoring them 27-3 in the second
half and ending their 18-game winning streak.
1936
In the first official draft of college players, the Bears
select tackle Joe Stydahar from the University of West
Virginia with the seventh overall pick. Stydahar goes
on to become a Hall of Famer.
Dec. 12, 1937
Behind Sammy Baugh’s three TD passes,
Washington defeats the Bears 28-21 in
the NFL championship game.

The Bears acquire Sid
Luckman, a quarterback
from Columbia University
who would become the
leading passer in team
history.

Cold weather on Dec. 18 renders Wrigley Field unplayable, so the Bears and the
Portsmouth Spartans play the league’s first-ever postseason game indoors at
Chicago Stadium on an 80-yard field. The Bears win 9-0 to take the championship.
Later that year, co-owner Dutch Sternaman sells his share of the team to Halas.
