2. SCADA defined
• Supervisory Control And Data
Acquisition.
• It is used to create the
visualizations/animations of any
running process.
What is
SCADA?
• PLC is like a black box. Earlier they
were programmed and run for
years. No one knew what was
happening inside the PLC.
• The solution was PLC + SCADA.
Why
SCADA?
3. Softwares and hardware
Wonderware
Intouch for
SCADA
RSLinx Classic
for
communications
RSLogix 500 for
PLC
programming
Programmable Logic
Controllers (PLCs) -
Standardized on
Allen-Bradley SLC
and Micrologix
controllers.
4. The two faces of SCADA
Traditional SCADA for pipelines,
power distribution or anything that
spans great distances.
Local control SCADA for plant or
unit operations or any architecture
that is within a defined boundary.
5. Features of SCADA
Dynamic process graphics
Alarm
Real time and historical trends
Security
Recipe management
Device connectivity
6. Dynamic process graphics
Once the operator sees the screen he should know what
is going on in the plant.
7. Alarm
Alarms indicate to the operator when something goes
wrong.
It signals that a device or process has stopped operating
within acceptable, pre-defined limits or it can indicate
breakdown.
Generally you have alarm states for each input/output
like your temperature shouldn’t cross 80 degrees.
8. Real time and historical trends
If the plant trips you can simply go to the historical trend
data and do the analysis.
For e.g., If an acid regeneration plant is operated at 900
degrees, instead of the usual 850 degrees, it means
additional LPG is being put into the reactor. The
production manager can go through the trends to find
the problem.
9. Security
Allocation of certain facilities or features to different
people.
For e.g., operators should only operate the system, he
shouldn’t be able to change the application. The
engineers should have access to changing the application
developed.
10. Recipe management
Most of the plants manufacture multiple products.
When you have different products to manufacture, you
just have to load the recipe of that particular product.
11. Device connectivity
There are hundreds of automation hardware
manufacturers like Modicon, Siemens, Allen Bradley etc.
Every software has its own way of communication or
communication protocol with its respective hardware.
This shouldn’t happen.
The software like Wonderware has connectivity to almost
all hardware used in automation.
12. About graphic objects
The components that make up a graphic display.
You can attach animation for example apply both width
and height animation to an object to give it the
appearance of moving into or out of the display as it
shrinks or grows respectively.
